Sony has announced it is to deliver its last MiniDisc stereo next month.
It marks an end to the firm's support for the system which it launched in 1992.
The format only ever had limited success outside of Japan and was ultimately doomed by the rise of recordable CDs and MP3 players.
The news coincided with a teaser video released by the company promoting a PlayStation event with the caption: Be the first to know.
Are their MP3 players still top-notch? I remember back then MP3 players were a thing, Walkman ones were the best around.
My mom bought me a pack of those because I asked for some mini-CD's.
I felt so bad she spent the money on them I kept them and still have that 5 pack on my shelf.
My family had a massive hi-fi minidisc player, we used them instead of tapes for recording stuff off the radio for a while (this was before BBC iplayer and all that shit). Bizarrely we had one before we got the internet or TV - fucking hipsters.
Im actually really surprised they are still manufacturing them at all.

iPod has always been better than walkman.

The Walkman line, in my opinion, is still the greatest line of MP3 players. I've got an E series from 4 years ago and it still works great.

iPods can have all their fancy shit that boosts up the price. I'm happy with a <$70 device that plays great quality music and has the capacity to play movies. For an 8GB device, I think I'd roll with the Walkman any day of the week.
Hey, that advert in the OP is actually pretty clever.

They were really, really popular in Japan, and have stuck around there for a long time.

I've never seen ipods as nice mp3 players to be honest, they handle video stuff well but if you buy an iPod for just audio you have a bulky thing that you'll never fill

on the other hand, Walkman MP3 players are tiny and have the right amount of space and controls.

The original iPod Nano is and forever shall be the best MP3 player.
[editline]1st February 2013[/editline]
Looking at a picture of it for the first time in years, the screen looks hilariously small lol

In my own personal opinion I prefer the Ipod Classic. Out of all the large capacity storage players, that is the most descent. I have 50+GB of music, and I'm somehow unahppy if it isn't all on my mp3 player.
iPod has always been better than walkman.
They have shit DAC's.
Sony's sound systems are superior to iPods, or at least in my experience. With a solid set of headphones, I've never used an iPod that could put out the same smooth tone with the equalizer off that can come out of my Sony. Just a matter of preference, I guess. If I was primarily a video watcher on the go, I'd probably have settled with an iTouch ages ago. But as it so happens, I'm not. And so the Walkman series fits the bill perfectly for a price that won't fish ridiculous amounts of money out of my pocket.
They have shit DAC's.
they're good enough for portable play...don't get audiophile on something that's meant for convenience.

never compared those new walkmans to ipods. might do that one day.

the older ipods sound like ass though.

I still ahve the 20gb Clickwheel iPod from ninje years ago. It's outlived every other ipod I have owned.
I still have niche places that I still use Minidisc. Head unit in the car plays minidisc in fact.

I don't think I could deal with having a screen that small. It looks like an absolute pain to navigate menus with. Bulk isn't an issue because I'm either holding it, or its in my pocket.
I think I'll stick to my Galaxy Nexus.

they're not bulky at all. they fit perfectly easily into any normal trouser/jean pocket
i'm happy to buy apple when it comes to portable music because i find the ui simple and easy to use on the move with enough controls to let me properly decide how to listen to my music. they've always been consistent in build quality and i've never had one break. my classic is ridiculously large enough to fit all my music on and, in the mad eventuality that it one day isn't, apple are leading the way in development of portable music players that stream on 4G - they're pretty much just waiting for the internet technology to catch up now
i've moved on from a touch to a classic recently though and i've got to say the touch was way more intuitive for me. much faster to get around. i had no need for it other than for music though and it was too small to fit everything on

Kids these days. I remember when an MP3 player only had a display just to display track names. There was no menu and there was almost no settings. You loaded your shit, jacked in and pressed play.

My mum had one of those and it was a piece of shit that broke in 3 months and had an AWFUL GUI. I never used one myself though, so I can't say too much about it.

I had one of these until I got a proper smartphone, and they were pretty slick. It categorized your music depending on its mood (upbeat, mellow, happy etc...). My only real gripe at it is that it has no gapless playback which is A MUST for me.

Creative had some very nice mp3 players.
I had one of these bad boys before I got a 120gb ipod classic

One of the best players I had, was a bit big but for what was out at the time this blew it out of the water. The screen was pretty amazing too.

I don't find them bulky at all, and I find even 160GB iPods a bit on the small side capacity-wise, god forbid a tiny ass player.
i had a walkman, it always chewed the tapes up. what a piece of shit. thank fuck i didn't get suckered into buying a minidisc player. or a zip drive.
I've never understood why anyone cares about this
depends what music you listen to, an electronic mix is basically 1 hour of uninterrupted music, the gaps are annoying.
I've never understood why anyone cares about this
I get that you're not a Pink Floyd fan :v:
[editline]2nd February 2013[/editline]
To clarify, I listen to A LOT of bands that tend to segue all their tracks together in their albums, so it gets really annoying (and breaks the mood for me) having to hear those cutoffs between tracks.
Reminds me of the first MP3 player I had. It held a total of 256 meg of music, had no screen, and broke after being dropped once. This has nothing to do with Minidisc.
I used to have some minidisc that a company my Dad was contracted with would hand out with their demo software. They were cool as shit.
