Armies that revel in their separateness from civil society, that value the male over the female, ... who celebrate the violence that is integral to my profession rather than seek ways to contain it ... they do nothing to distinguish the soldier from the brute.

Australia's Army chief has used a speech in London to argue that militaries that exclude women "do nothing to distinguish the soldier from the brute".
The four-day Global Summit To End Sexual Violence has ended with 155 countries signed up to a declaration to end impunity for rape in war.
Lieutenant General David Morrison is already well known for a video address to his forces during a sexual abuse scandal last year, where he told sexist members of the armed forces to "get out".
Sharing the stage with the UNHCR's special envoy Angelina Jolie and British foreign secretary William Hague, Lt Gen Morrison called on women to serve in all roles in armed forces across the world.
"I'm no sociologist, I have no anthropological training but I'm certain of this ... we live in a world where the squandering of women's talent, the traducing of their potential, is a global disgrace," he said in the speech.
He said some militaries were changing their culture in order to become more capable and that was cause for hope.
Lt Gen Morrison encouraged militaries around the world to open up all areas of service to women as a way of changing their culture and helping end sexual violence.
"It wipes away the barriers to achieving potential and sends a clarion call to all who serve that talent will prevail, not gender," he said.
This is exactly what he's talking about, you're heavily implying that women can't handle combat situations even though they receive the same basic training as men.
im not even like trying to be sexist or anything like
war is bad
[editline]14th June 2014[/editline]
im not doing a good job of using my words
Also, on topic, it is great that someone high up (?) is finally speaking out against this.

If a woman wants to pick up a gun and fight for her country, let her. Nothing should stop women from joining the army, your views are

nobody is campaigning for how great war is. nobody is saying 'war is really fuckin cool lets let the girls do it'. we do war - often - it's an established thing that we do.
we're not saying 'let's make the war stronger by adding the women to it', we're saying 'stop implying women are unfit for combat roles'
Why don't you campaign against ending war then?
that'll work

Preserving innocent lives is great, that's great, but your opening statement was slightly ignorant
The whole drafted and sent off to die by the dozens thing hasn't been accurate since the first world war
I'm all for gender equality but wouldn't menstruation make women bad infantry? No matter how good your training is you can't avoid that.
I'm all for gender equality but wouldn't menstruation make women bad infantry? No matter hoe good your training is you can't avoid that.
hoe good indeed
hoe good indeed
It'd make them more vicious and pissed off, perfect for the army

I will never be able to see the sense in this argument primarily because dysentery exists

You don't save any lives by doing that. You just choose to spend more of one group's lives over the other. That's inequality.
You want to make war more unacceptable, which is a totally fair thing to advocate for. I'd jump on the bandwagon for that. The problem is, you can't say, "No, we can't add anymore people to the soldier mix because war is bad!" We still need help in the meantime, and if people are willing to give it let them give it.
As long as physical strength is still a factor in warfare (which it is), women should be held to the same physical standards as men if they want to serve on the front lines. That means they should be tested to be able to lift the same amount of weight, and have the same level of endurance as men. Otherwise they would be a detriment to their comrades in arms.
I will never be able to see the sense in this argument primarily because dysentery exists
How so?
How so?
Historically, dysentery has been a pretty huge problem for infantry and soldiers in general, pick a war at random, it is practically guaranteed that there was no shortage of frontline infantry afflicted with it and still fighting
It's most prominent in conflicts in tropical and subtropical regions and is often accompanied by malaria in those areas, but it's by no means restricted to those areas
If you're not already familiar with dysentery, it's an an inflammatory disorder of the intestine, and its most prominent symptom is the severe diarrhea, accompanied by abdominal cramps and fever, that diarrhea has a tendency to be flecked with blood and mucus, in general, it's not a nice thing to have, and it has a tendency to persist, sometimes continuously, sometimes with a rise and fall of symptoms
But the men afflicted with it continued to fight regardless and accepted it as a part of the reality of their conflict
It's probably not the best rationale but there it is
I'm all for gender equality but wouldn't menstruation make women bad infantry? No matter how good your training is you can't avoid that.
I'm guessing they can get their shit together and work through it. Women do in the normal workplace.
"Captain we need to resupply the firebase in the valley"
"Nope."
"Sir, they have to be dangerously low on ammunition at this point"
"God I hope so"
"What?"
"It is an all female firebase. They synced. Now for three days a month, we don't go anywhere fucking near that place. Attempts to raise them on the radio have either failed entirely, or simply resulted in an open line from the base in which we can hear the entire radio room sobbing uncontrollably. The UAV in the region returned footage of them using the 60mm mortars to lay waste to a single outhouse in the neighboring village. They fired 320 incendiary shells. The locals are terrified."
"What are they doing now?"
"No idea. They shot down the UAV with what appeared to be a stinger. We didn't even send stingers to that base. Fuck that place, man."
Or it could be like online gameplay:
"Dude, there's a girl over there!"
"UHHHHHHH. UHHHHHHH. Well she's obviously a man! There's no such thing as girls on the battlefield!"
