Sounds like things went ugly from both sides.
This is why I believe Black Lives Matter ends up doing more harm than good, because it has scared people into believing that cops are really out to kill them. As a result, people do stupid stuff that puts them and others around them in danger.

Jesus fucking christ man, are you using BLM to justify tasering and pepper spraying everyone?

Incidents like this don't help at all.
Jesus fucking christ man, are you using BLM to justify tasering and pepper spraying everyone?
No, I'm saying that someone fleeing the police has put people in danger. BLM is partly responsible for helping put fear into people when it comes to police. When it needed to be constructive, it was very unconstructive instead and reduced relations between police and blacks further.
A few seconds earlier, Smith had refused to get on the floor and told officers, “I ain’t turning round for shit.”
Because that's totally something you should do.
She directs a brief burst of spray at the elderly woman’s head, causing her to reel.

Officers were chasing the 56-year-old after he ran a stop sign, drove to his mother’s house and failed to obey instructions to stay in his truck, then dashed into the home and refused to come out, according to police footage.
Jesus Christmas. He was drunk, they both were resisting orders from the police and the police acted responsibly by using non lethals to calm them down and subdue them.
Are you people serious? She was old but she was not complying and you can not take age into consideration when it comes to the law. He was a drunken idiot who went to her house, got her involved, she voluntarily chose to as well and this is the result of it.
This whole article screams, "I want attention because I'm black and a cop touched me". How about stop comitting crimes and obey an officer of the law when they are ordering you to do something.
The 84 year old had every chance to obey the officer and not get pepper sprayed. She chose to disobey. This is an open and shut case at the DA s office. Somehow though you guys will sit here and tell me I'm wrong and how this is police abusing power.
Good police work and awesome use of non lethals.

What justifies pepper-spraying a terrified 84 year old woman who's clearly not a threat in any way? Are you implying police should treat innocent, elderly bystanders the same as belligerent criminals?
I understand the officers were under pressure and overreacted, but it sounds like you're another one of many facepunchers desperate to delegitimize the issue of police violence against black people.

"clearly not a threat in any way" Right because it's so hard to imagine that an 84 year old mother might reach for a gun or knife to defend her son. They gave her a dozen opportunities to comply. Did you watch the video?

Innocent bystander my ass. You stop being an innocent bystander the second you start interfering with their ability to do their job.

Disobey orders when you're harboring a criminal, ya get fucked.
Not like its unheard of for the elderly to fuck people up anyway. It happens way more often than you'd think.

Boy the OP sure is fair not including the part where she was telling the police to fuck off when they came looking for her son who was involved in a pursuit and continued not listening to their orders while they were there.
Any of my time dealing with police; listening to what they ask me to do/being cooperative has always worked in my favor because the second you don't they will not treat you the same and will remember it for the whole encounter
100% justified.
How hard is it to just fucking comply.
in Europe we send them ticket to pay fine or to appear infront judge / comitee ...
you know he ran stop sign in first place
why the hell is multiple officers bursting into the flat with weapon ready ?
I always though such si case vs serious criminals ,
so unless he was something like well known drug dealer and the stop sign case is just smoke&mirrors ...
then this is absurd (especially considering the elderly civilians in same flat)

Yeah right. Relations between black people and the police have already been bad for as long as this country has existed.

He was drunk and he sped through a stop sign.
Cars can be used as weapon too you know? He was fleeing.

That doesn't mean it can't degenerate from where it was like 3 years ago.
Idk why people think that just cause racism has always existed, this clear increase in racial tension were experiencing on BOTH SIDES is dismissible. Black Lives Matter has hurt race relations. It's painted VERY clear sides that we haven't seen this bold since like the 80s. Does that mean the idea of the group is bad? Hell no. Are they helping? In small doses, but every positive step for them has been dashed by a very negative step so far and it's honestly depressing. Sadly you just have to work harder for the good to break through the bad, and THAT'S the issue

Probably were following him to pull him over, he didn't and they figured he was hiding shit. Honestly not that unreasonable, but both parties needed to rationalize a bit more before acting I feel.

Dude did you read the article at all?
Age has nothing to do with threats, clearly she wasn't terrified if she responded "I'm not turning around for shit."
Stop making excuses for people who do not comply with the law.
Instead of taking her down to the ground they sprayed her. It is the less harmful option to gain compliance.
Play stupid games and win stupid prizes.
Damn that taser shot was pretty impressive.
just because she's 84 doesn't mean she has a free ticket to disobey police orders.

pretty important crimes

i'd take being tazed and maced over being shot

Aka a felony arrest, you know which is pretty serious. Anyone who hides a felon or interferes with a felony arrest is considered just as dangerous.
