A stable of new iPads wasn't all Apple had up its sleeve today. The folks in Cupertino have also been hard at work on a desktop update, and the iMac is the beneficiary.
Holy shit.
Hopefully this finally drives PC manufacturers to release cheaper 4k displays?
I want a pc amoled display too.
Starts at 2499 dollars.
Considering what 4K monitors cost, that's legitimately surprising.
All for the low low price of $2000
Imacs are pretty underpowered
Even in an updated model, how will they drive that resolution?
Dell's 5K monitor is $2500

It seemed like the other specs were quite good as well
One of the guys at my brother's old work had a triple monitor setup with those huge iMac displays it was pretty impressive
ahha that's fucking neat and all but I dig how they're literally just trying to one up the 4K standard
actually they're just doubling the previous resolution like they have with every Retina update.
but yeah this is pretty crazy.
imagine a triple monitor setup with these
Hopefully this finally drives PC manufacturers to release cheaper 4k displays?
Well since apple will be ordering a few million of these displays I could see this becoming a (somewhat) standard monitor size.
That's honestly a bit of an overkill.
I'm OK with it. I desperately want the world to move past 1080p.
Imacs are pretty underpowered

the R9 M290X and M295X are pretty decent cards, no idea what models the CPUs are though.
1080p is alright, and you don't need like 4 980s to run games at that resolution.
if only there was a way to run games at 1080p on a 4k monitor.
That's honestly a bit of an overkill.
I would be on the fence about agreeing with you, but for a 27" display? Lol. Huge overkill. At least make a bigger damn monitor if you're going to do resolutions past 4K.
1080p is alright, and you don't need like 4 980s to run games at that resolution.
with the speed graphics cards are advancing at 4k gaming for enthusiasts is not too far away. 4k gaming is already possible for those wanting to shell out a few grand on GPUs. 1080p is gonna get shoved to the side eventually, and 1440p/4k will move in.
What are you gonna use it for then, all media is still at 1080p. So the only thing you gain from it is slightly nicer fonts and such. It's only really relevant if you do a lot of image editing.
The vast majority of content people look at is text/gui/images , and all of those at high DPI is sexy sharp.
Its getting really annoying having crisp text on my phone then jumping to the my PC where characters are 1px in thickness.
1080p is alright, and you don't need like 4 980s to run games at that resolution.
you need one 980 to run games at 30fps 4k
What are you gonna use it for then, all media is still at 1080p. So the only thing you gain from it is slightly nicer fonts and such.
You can edit videos with a 1080p full quality image in the corner of your screen

That looks like a fantastic monitor, and a good price as well. But answer me this, why can't it be 5120x3200 16:10? I hate the shift away from 30" Displays towards 27"s. You literally gain nothing with that aspect ratio over a 16:10. I would hate to downgrade to a 27" personally.

pixel density matters more than having a >27" monitor in this case (which pretty much nobody wants as their primary desktop display when it comes to creative applications)

i don't think you really understand the userbase for a 5k iMac. it's not a media consumption device, it's a production device

It seems to have very limited use except for e.g. video editing as someone mentioned above. Even then I'd still say it's unnecessary.

that's the primary userbase for high end iMacs. creative applications
that's the primary userbase for high end iMacs. creative applications
as I said though, still pretty unnecessary imo. The ability to have a full 1080p video running in less than a quarter in your screen is so limited a convenience.

I'm a professional content creator and I can only see this being useful if it was set to a 'retina' mode devoting four pixels to one, but keeping the same real estate as a 2560x1440 display. I use a 30" and I can tell you that if I was running it at 5k resolution it'd be very difficult to use since my task bar would only be a quarter of an inch high for example. I agree it should be bigger that 27, I would like a screen at around 35" personally.
i can see practical application for web developers too. since this monitor basically has the highest consumer available resolution monitor there is you can scale down your site to any resolution to bugtest. and lots of things like that
not to say people will be using this monitor at 1:1 scale, they definitely won't be. i think i would though (seeing as i do on my rMBP, and that has a higher PPI than the 5k iMac)
I just want the LG 34UC97. Too bad it's £1300.

But what if you're editing 4k video / DSLR (or otherwise high-megapixel-count) pictures which are becoming increasingly common
[editline]f[/editline]
I can dig it where in OSX the display scaling is a bit less absolute arse than Windows
Omg I want a monitor like this for photo editing

I was just thinking of editing 4K video. Fair enough there but since it still hasn't really gotten big the time isn't really ripe yet.
