seems like my kind of game.
I might get this. As soon as Steam actually lets me purchase stuff!
Frictional is fantastic at horror and terror and shit-pants. They have Penumbra and Amnesia on their belt, two of the best fucking horror series ever. thechineseroom is fantastic at environment and storytelling. Not really a huge surprise that its less scary. I really can't wait to see the difference. I couldn't play much of The Dark Descent because I'm a pussy when it comes to horror, but I can generally handle freaky environments and subtler horror alright. Plus I love thechineseroom.
I was hoping to hear good things about this ever since I found out Frictional was only advising the game. The Chinese Room is still pretty unproven in my eyes. Yeah Dear Esther looked great, but it was hard to consider it a game so as far as I am concerned, The Chinese Room hasn't really made a game before, never mind a follow up to a widely loved horror game. Looks like its a worthy successor, though the news of fewer genuinely horrifying moments and the loss of a lantern oil/tinderbox system is a bit disappointing. [editline]9th September 2013[/editline] Also holy fuck I didn't notice it at first, but there's a monster at 3:40, you can just about make it out at the right of the screen.
I got this on pre-order through steam. It unlocks tomorrow. I don't know if I'm ready or not...
I'm kind of disappointed about the tinderbox/oil system as well but they handled Dear Esther perfectly and I'd imagine that is why they were picked for the job. Frictional is busy working on another unannounced title but I'm definitely content with their studio of choice and that we'll be enjoying another Amnesia game in less than 16 hours.

Making a well crafted horror experience is not easy. Making a game like Dear Esther is hardly qualification. Don't get me wrong, the review made it sound like the game isn't bad. I'm just saying that's where my concerns with the game lied, and seeing as its less genuinely horrifying, they weren't completely misplaced. Still looking forward to it, just slightly disheartened to hear that. I was hoping the sequel would be a step up in that direction.
Conflicted. Chinese Room have done some really impressive visuals, but I've found they fail to engage on any other front. A minimalist horror game like Amnesia might be the best place for them to apply their talents with that in mind. I'll probably check it out when it goes on discount; I haven't played much of Amnesia because it's actually far too terrifying for me to comfortably play, and setting that in an abattoir is basically an idea taken straight out of my fucking nightmares.

According to the reviews, they're a multi-talented studio that can handle whatever material they're given. It may not be as scary as what Frictional has done in the past but neither was the first Penembra. Give them a few tries (if they continue to make horror games) and they'll definitely be up to par.
Speaking of AMFP, how are all these Let's Players playing the game right now?

The Chinese Room makes great ones. I'm pretty happy for that, since I prefer environmental eeriness over all-out horror. Might not be for everyone, but I hated the horror parts in The Dark Descent, and more focus on environment rather than shock horror sounds great to me.
time to just hope there aren't horrifying humanoid-pig monsters
time to just hope there aren't horrifying humanoid-pig monsters
Do you want something worse, or do you not want to see humanoid pig monsters? Because there's almost certainly going to be humanoid pig monsters for better or worse.

Just a heads up, the game is getting a pretty negative response from fans of the original game.
I quite liked the inventory stuff in the last one.
