Phone manufactures have been making us choose between either a plastic phone with a removable battery or a more premium feeling metal device with sealed components, but the G5 brings the best of both worlds. This is a metal phone with a removable battery, thanks to an innovative modular design.

The bottom bezel houses the USB Type C port, microphone, and speaker, necessitating an internal data connection with the rest of the phone. Besides replacing the battery, you can also replace the bottom bezel with something else entirely—LG plans to build several modular accessories that clip on to the bottom of the phone, replacing the stock bezel. So far LG has announced a camera grip accessory and a DAC attachment.

The G5 is also one of the first phones in a new wave of 2016 devices sporting the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC. The Android hardware ecosystem is finally free from the tyranny of the Snapdragon 810, which had some heat and throttling issues that flagships had to deal with for most of 2015. Much of the heat issues in the 810 were blamed on Qualcomm switching from its custom "Krait" CPU cores to off-the-shelf ARM cores—a decision made so the Snapdragon 810 could be a 64-bit chip.

The full spec list is a 5.3-inch, 2560×1440 LCD, a Snapdragon 820, 4GB of RAM, dual rear 16MP and 8MP cameras, an 8MP front camera, a 2800mAh battery, and 32GB of storage. All the extras you could want are here too: a microSD slot, an IR blaster, a fingerprint reader, NFC, and a USB Type C port. The only things you could really complain about are the lack of wireless charging (a no-go for metal phones) and LG's Android skin.
I NEEEED ITTTT
I really like the idea of it, it certainly seems nice. Would be expensive as hell to get all of the accessories, but yeah. Tangle free headphone design, oh my. Wonder how well it works. I need that in my life.
Fucking props to whoever directed that first product video, it was awesome. Catchy song too :v:
I'm glad they're expanding on what made their last two phones better then the S5/S6
So they added an active display/amoled screen and shrank the battery.. I really hope the 820 finally blows everything away both performance and battery life wise because while the G3/G4 were perfectly good phones neither significantly improved over the G2 aside from software and build quality.
They better have thought through some sort of anti-theft measure. I can see a lot of people having their batteries and shit stolen otherwise. Normal phones can be locked and tracked, I'm not so sure about modular batteries and cameras.
Finally something a bit different, I'm really tired of seeing companies pushing out the same fucking phone every year with an extra core on the CPU and some more ram here and there and an even more ridiculous resolution that's pointless...
This is a sexy phone. I want one.
It's a start. I was definitely expecting a lot more in the terms of it being "modular", but it's definitely something to advance on.

Thinking about it the lack of wireless charging could very likely be changed with a new battery module
I'm glad they're expanding on what made their last two phones better then the S5/S6
When it comes down to it, Samsung has a better build quality, LG has a better visual to some. I hear scads of issues with LG build quality, my personal experience matches this (LG G2, extremely good shape, failing digitizer). With my limited use of the S5/S6 and G3/G4, I do prefer the Samsungs. In terms of reliability, specs, and features.
What the hell is that first video

This could be a problem though if there's a private/commercial sale on an item that has an associated account and there's no proof of sale. :/
Thinking about it the lack of wireless charging could very likely be changed with a new battery module
I'm pretty sure wireless charging doesn't work with metal phones.

smaller battery, and probably more proprietary stuff that won't work on a custom rom ah well
smaller battery, and probably more proprietary stuff that won't work on a custom rom ah well
ROM devs tend to get around to supporting these features though
Most innovative phone for years?
i like the sound of a DAC attachment
Thats absolutely hideous, but at least its functional.
Yeah I'm not a fan of how it looks. I don't really care much for the modular stuff either. People say that the V10 is a better option than this but it's far too big imo.
why do you care about how a phone looks??? it's in my pocket 90% of the day, and it's not like i look at anything but the screen anyway
ROM devs tend to get around to supporting these features though
but then you have to get the ones with 20 tags and special extra super romz that never gets updated, just for that model i only go with cm now since it's the most actively updated and well known, but it doesn't use any proprietary stuff
I wonder if the screen is replaceable without having to unglue it. That'd be nice. Seems highly unlikely though.
i like the sound of a DAC attachment
You can actually use it outside of the phone too which it pretty cool.
why do you care about how a phone looks??? it's in my pocket 90% of the day, and it's not like i look at anything but the screen anyway
because I just do
It looks just like any other phone in terms of design?
I'd sure like to get it, but I don't have my G2 for that long yet and it serves me perfectly fine yet. I sure hope they'll move the volume rockers to the back again in the next generation. I've gotten really used to it, and lately I always instinctively feel at the back of a phone looking for the volume rockers. Second is the fact that the G2 is my first upgrade to a 5.2" phone, the buttons being on the back feels much more natural than on the front to be honest.
gross [editline]22nd February 2016[/editline]
why do you care about how a phone looks??? it's in my pocket 90% of the day, and it's not like i look at anything but the screen anyway
because a lot of people care about good design ethics and their looks. your phone is part of your fashion statement now, whether you like it or not. get over it
then put a cool case on it problem solved
god the first video posted is so cringe worthy reminds me of that stupid delta airlines meme instruction video [editline]22nd February 2016[/editline]
then put a cool case on it problem solved
i'm not buying a phone that I have to put a case on for it to be deemed not ugly i don't even mind the g5 looks all that much, but 'put a case on it' isn't good
i'm not buying a phone that I have to put a case on for it to be deemed not hideous
i put a case on any phone i buy, hideous or not. pretty much a requirement so i dont break it. LG G5 Modular design is probably gonna have some fancy case though
