China summoned the North Korean ambassador and delivered a stern protest, and as after previous tests, the foreign ministry called for a calm reaction and denuclearisation talks. However, it stopped short of the harsh criticism it unleashed in 2006 when it described the North's first nuclear test as "brazen". Beijing agreed to extend United Nations sanctions after the North launched a rocket in December, signing up to a security council resolution that warned of "significant action" against further missile or nuclear tests. It had signalled its unhappiness with Pyongyang in the runup to Tuesday's test, which was felt on the Chinese side of the border. Even so, it will not cut off its neighbour and is likely to oppose the toughest measures sought by the US and others, analysts say.
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
In the beginning, it was kinda a big deal. I mean shit, we would have Annexed NK if China hadn't surprise attacked. But now....No idea what NK does, other than buy their crap sometimes.
One could say that their binding energy was just released. :v:

Eagerly awaiting Hu Jintao to come out and say "I'M GettTING TIReD Of YOUR SHiT NoRTH KoreA"
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
China had a vested interest in North Korea during the early cold war, and that alliance lingered for a long time. At this point the two countries have little in common and North Korea has basically just become this "my crazy ex-girlfriend" situation to the Chinese government.
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
China is probably interested in limiting western influence in the northwest pacific and thus has interest in keeping its old friends close . They are sort of similar after all, while South Korea is essentially a "Western nation" by ideological, economical and social standards.
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
China's just a regional power and likes pulling the strings. Because China and North Korea border each other, China can control the flow of foreign aid into North Korea. Because both are totalitarian communism governments and both populations are of similar ethnicity, they can probably relate to each other more. However like I pointed out, China pulls the strings and does not like another nuclear power in the region that can potentially be destabilizing. Nevermind my 'analysis' on foreign policy though.

North Korea is basically that drunk friend of yours who always tries to get in fights and forces himself on people, ending up being disliked by everyone.
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
Most likely because North Korea serves as a border state between them and US-influenced countries like South Korea.
None of the countries that border North Korea enjoy its presence. Basically, Russia, S.K. and China.
Today I learned that Russia shares a (albeit small) border with NK.
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
This may or may not factor into the whole alliance, but because China is sort of buddy-buddy with NK they don't get any people illegally entering China to get away. If they did anyway, they'd get sent right back.
Why does China even like the NK? Also, I would imagine that it isn't a bad idea to keep good relations with a country that has nuclear weapons, especially since they border each other.

China's relationship with NK is paperthin and has been for years. It's no where near the level it was during the cold war.
Why does China even like the NK? Does NK provide any benefits to them as allies?
You could ask the same from US, they are allied with Israel and give them assload of money every year. Israel gives them absolutely no benefit other than existing.
Its like the Big Brother has had enough shit from the Little Brother.

I mean, trying to see things from China's perspective I'm sure the US or west in general must seem quite a bit more imperialistic and aggressive than China does to us. Considering how western influence has spread to pretty much every single continent.
None of the countries that border North Korea enjoy its presence. Basically, Russia, S.K. and China.
Russia enjoys the near-free lumber workforce NK gives them.
