A collaboration between a pharmaceutical company and a biotech firm has yielded a new Hodgkin's lymphoma treatment that can shrink tumors by 75 percent in a wide swath of patients.
Seattle Genetics is the biotech innovator behind the new therapy, which was designed in conjunction with Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.
In a company-funded trial of 102 advanced lymphoma patients, who hadn't responded to other treatment efforts, researchers determined that the new drug -- SGN-35 -- radically reduced tumor size in more than half of the patients.
Although lymphoma treatments have made rapid strides in recent years, the disease still kills more than 1,000 Americans each year. Those who don't respond to existing treatment approaches typically die within three years of diagnosis.
"We believe the data are really promising for these patients who have a very poor prognosis and very few options," Clay Siegall, the CEO of Seattle Genetics, told reporters.
SGN-35 is one of the first drugs to combine cutting-edge genetic science with cancer-killing medicine. The drug combines an antibody with a cancer-killing toxin. When the antibody links to cancer cell receptors, the toxin can kill the cell without destroying surrounding tissue.
The drug was effective for around six months, according to data released by Seattle Genetics. The company plans to apply for Food and Drug Administration approval that would fast-track the implementation of SGN-35 in patients.
The success of SGN-35 also offers proof of principle for the company's novel approach to cancer treatments. Previous efforts at linking an antibody to a toxin have failed, often because the toxin falls off the antibody and into the bloodstream.
Fucking biotech how does it work?!
This is fucking awesome, at last we see some powerful new drugs that can at last pimp slap the shit out of cancer.

Does that mean it just comes back?
Great news
Does that mean it just comes back?
No, that means that even after 6 months it still works.
You know, you can misinterpret the title as "Seattle Genetics has discovered a new tumor that shrinks cancer treatment." It would also be a troll tumor.

What no
I assume it means the active ingredient keeps working for 6 months to stop the tumors from growing/destroys them, then it stops doing its thing and the stuff can slowly grow back. So in other words it can help mitigate damage and control the spread.
Hope it works, my great grandpa is taking some drugs to fight his cancer but it put him in lots of pain and isn't that effective. He is a great guy and I think he could still have a few more years. Its sad because my baby brother will never get to meet him.

I bet it's written off just like all of the other ones.
This is good, this is very good. You probably won't lose your hair through this treatment, which is also a bonus. :v:
I can't be the only one that notices that we get these kind of news every month. About how scientist find a "cure" or something similar for Cancer. And then a week after it's never heard of again.
