Guns that are manufactured to be as perfect as possible can still blow up in your face. A homemade gun just seems like a bad idea. One mistake in making it and you could blow up half the gun sending shrapnel everywhere.

It's not your average garage gun.

Though I don't know much about modern tanks, they might not have that much armor at the rear.

The only thing they'd really be able to do to a tank is destroy the optics, break the lights, or ruin any of the crap that is being stored on the outside of the tank, like jerry cans for fuel.
