There's a new Oddworld game, subtitled Soulstorm, due for launch in late 2017.
Publisher Oddworld Inhabitants announced the title via oddworld.com/soulstorm, where a handful of story details are revealed.
Soulstorm will be a follow-up to Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, itself a reimagining of the original Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee game.
There's no direct reference to Soulstorm being a reimagining of the next game in the series, Oddworld: Exoddus, but it certainly sounds like this will be the case.
"There was a deeper, darker, and more sinister story that we never got to tell," series creator Lorne Lanning said, hinting at Soulstorm's roots.
"Soulstorm gives us the opportunity to flesh out more meat on the bones of an original spine, but re-tell the fable from a very different angle."
The story also sounds similar:
"Having defeated Molluck The Glukkon, his former boss and RuptureFarms' meanest inhabitant, Abe soon finds himself - along with 300 newly emancipated Mudokons - without food, water or a place to call home," the press release reads.
That's a pretty intense title.
Still haven't gotten around to playing New n Tasty but it's cool that they're remaking the original two games like this. At least, that seems to be what they're doing again with this entry.
I've been hoping they would make another game.
I hope they fix the issues with the remake's aesthetic, especially if they plan on making something with a darker tone.
I met a few of the Devs at the Oddworld expo in EGX last year and they said that most people there loved the game as kids but it gave them nightmares which was quite funny. If you managed to complete a level, they gave you a free key to New 'n' Tasty, which was really cool of them.
I really hope it's tonally consistent with the older games
I guess no good game was using the subtitle "Soulstorm" already.

Though imagine Commander Boreale in his very own game.
So is Abe escaping a dark eldar web way in this one?
That looks like behind head view of a blind worker in Soulstorm Brewery. Closed eyelids are giving them away. If so its great because I hated the bold look on mudokons except Abe himself.

It's amazing. One of the most underrated games of last year imo, if you enjoyed the originals you couldn't ask for a more faithful remake.
I hope they really expand upon the foundation Exoddus left in its wake. It was a great improvement on Oddysee mechanically, but I still prefer Exoddus thematically.
New n' Tasty wasn't bad at all for what they were doing either, so what with the hot profits they made it ought to be better.
For anyone who didn't know, Abe's Oddysee was originally going to be called Oddworld: Soulstorm back in 1997 until Lorne decided to change it at the last minute.
I'm glad they're using the name, honestly.

The game wasn't that great but some of the content was good. Still Dark Crusades and Winter assault were pretty good.
I have a number of hopes for this game. I'd like if they brought the art direction more in line with the originals and stopped using stock Unity assets, the assets are fine they just don't fit Oddworld and the dirty screen effect was unnecessary. I'd like the art director to actually pay attention to the backgrounds of the old games when designing the new one, he fucked up the motion sensors because he didn't notice the giaganitc projectors in the background. Also it'd be nice if they made it so Abe snaps into position when interacting thich things like levers, doors, and mines. In New N' Tasty it's possible to blow yourself up while trying to deactivate a mine because Abe leans into it as he presses the button.
As happy as I am, I don't know how I feel about the series continuing in an alternate canon. Several hundred mudokons finding a new home and going up against the corporate world was the logical outcome anyway, so why not carry on the classic Oddworld story that fans fell in love with?

I think the plot will be the same, just re-written to add new things and take away others.
I get the feeling a bulk of this game will take place in between Oddysee and Exoddus where Abe and the other Mudokons are crossing the desert. I don't think they're completely changing the story as much as they're changing the game's aesthetic for this particular entry.

I disagree, though it's a close remake. There were certain artistic changes I didn't like, the tone of the game wasn't quite right. Hopefully with Soulstorm being darker they'll work on that.

If that's the case I'll be quite happy. If the story is pretty much the same they can just carry on post-Munch later and everyone's a winner.
They revealed his hand.

Jeez why is it so scarred, poor bastard.
The original two Oddworld games were fantastic works of art but I was REALLY let down by New N Tasty... It didn't hold up to the sheer level of detail artistically and the visuals for me were completely ruined by bloom rape and shitty lighting. Some of the animations lacked inertia and looked stiff too. Honestly this game doesn't need to be 3d at all. I miss the grittiness and beautifully hand drawn pixelated background art. Call me nostalgic but goddamn it just wasn't Oddworld to me. That raw strangeness you got from the sprites just seemed to fit the fantasy world so much better.

He did live and work in a meat factory his entire life.
As a floor waxer :v:
They're probably from all the shit he went through in Oddysee. I was just caught of guard by them is all.
Anyone else getting serious Rubber Johnny vibes from the fucked up video previews in the background?

Who still would have been routinely beaten by Sligs.
Holy shit a remake of exoddus, that was my favorite one in the series!
Can't wait to possess farts in HD.

Maybe it's because I was a kid the last time I played it, but the original seemed pretty dark. A company is consuming creatures faster than it can farm them, so it decides to round up the unneeded slaves that work there and grind them into food. Even without that bit, the factory has no safety features and a security force that will kill you for not working or being out of place.
I think that game is actually the main reason I love grimy industrial settings so much.
I had issues with the first remake. The controls just didn't feel as accurate, and it generally just felt slower (Possibly a performance issue on my system) I played it for an hour but in then end It just served to get me to play though the original again.
They've just revealed Abe's chest and he has the tattoo the Weirdos gave him, so chances are it'll follow the Exoddus story.

This ones fortunately made by OWI's in house team, in cooperation with a Canadian(i think?) team who have experience with CGI animation
was I the only one that loved Munchs Oddysee? I was too young for the first 2 games but i loved the third on the original xbox

I liked Munch's Oddysee but it was too kid friendly and too jokey. Sligs stop being intimidating when they're constantly the butt of jokes, like being dropped in front of the meat grinder fans or acting like a cartoon character when they're electrocuted. The latter being a part of what made New N' Tasty worse for me. In the first two games the electric fences were scary, you touch one and you slowly disintegrate, just *Zzt* "Oops" dead.
Also the controls are pretty terrible and the design changes were all bad. The Mudoken huts look like any generic fantasy wooden huts, the sligs were all given the flight masks even though the visor looks cooler and makes more sense, and the scrabs and paramites don't have any detail on them.
