With a single punch, Trayvon Martin decked the Neighborhood Watch volunteer who eventually shot and killed the unarmed 17-year-old, then Trayvon climbed on top of George Zimmerman and slammed his head into the sidewalk several times, leaving him bloody and battered, authorities have revealed to the Orlando Sentinel. That is the account Zimmerman gave police, and much of it has been corroborated by witnesses, authorities say. Zimmerman has not spoken publicly about what happened, but that night, Feb. 26, and in later meetings he described and re-enacted for police what he says happened. In his version of events, he had turned around and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from behind, the two exchanged words then Trayvon punched him in the nose, sending him to the ground, and began beating him. Zimmerman told police he shot the teenager in self-defense. Civil rights leaders and thousands of others have demanded Zimmerman's arrest, calling Trayvon a victim of racial profiling and Zimmerman a vigilante. Trayvon was an unarmed black teenager who had committed no crime, they say, who was gunned down while walking back from a 7-Eleven with nothing more sinister than a package of Skittles and can of Arizona iced tea. Supporters have held rallies in Sanford, Miami, New York and Tallahassee, calling the case a tragic miscarriage of injustice. Activist Al Sharpton headlined a rally in Sanford Thursday that drew an estimated 8,000 people. The Rev. Jesse Jackson yesterday spoke at an Eatonville church, where he called Trayvon a martyr. Another rally is scheduled for 4 p.m. today in Sanford. Zimmerman has gone into hiding. A fringe group, the New Black Panthers, have offered a $10,000 reward for his capture. Police have been reluctant to provided details about all their evidence, but this is what they've disclosed to the Sentinel: Zimmerman was on his way to the grocery store when he spotted Trayvon walking through his gated community. Trayvon was visiting his father's fiancée, who lived there. He had been suspended from school in Miami after being found with an empty marijuana baggie. Miami schools have a zero-tolerance policy for drug possession. Zimmerman called police and reported a suspicious person, describing Trayvon as black, acting strangely and perhaps on drugs. Zimmerman got out of his SUV to follow Trayvon on foot. When a dispatch employee asked Zimmerman if he was following the 17-year-old, Zimmerman said yes. The dispatcher told Zimmerman he did not need to do that. There is about a one-minute gap during which police say they're not sure what happened. Zimmerman told them he lost sight of Trayvon and was walking back to his SUV when Trayvon approached him from the left rear, and they exchanged words. Trayvon asked Zimmerman if he had a problem. Zimmerman said no and reached for his cell phone, he told police. Trayvon then said, "Well, you do now" or something similar and punched Zimmerman in the nose. Zimmerman fell to the ground and Trayvon got on top of him and began slamming his head into the sidewalk, he told police. Zimmerman began yelling for help. Several witnesses heard those cries, and there's been a dispute about from whom they came: Zimmerman or Trayvon. Lawyers for Trayvon's family say it was Trayvon, but police say their evidence indicates it was Zimmerman. One witnesses, who has since talked to local television news reporters, told police he saw Zimmerman on the ground with Trayvon on top, pounding him and was unequivocal that it was Zimmerman who was crying for help. Zimmerman then shot Trayvon once in the chest from very close range, according to authorities. When police arrived less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head. Paramedics gave him first aid, but he said no to going to the hospital. He got medical care the next day. The Department of Justice last week opened a civil rights investigation into what happened, and Gov. Rick Scott appointed a special prosecutor. It's not clear whether the special prosecutor, Angela Corey, the state attorney for Duval, Clay and Nassau counties, will have Zimmerman arrested, announce that there's not enough evidence to file a manslaughter charge or present evidence to a grand jury.
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/nationworld/os-trayvon-martin-zimmerman-account-20120326,0,2228143,full.story (new photos of the two)
Might be time to consolidate all these Zimmerman threads into one megathread.
This case isn't as black and white as it first appeared.
Not to make light of that kids death, but I'm laughing mad hard at all the knuckleheads here (sup starpluck, thisispain et al) who jumped on the bandwagon.
Skittles AND Arizona iced tea? This kid doesn't seem too bad.
Why would an A/B student that never had record of violent behavior and testified by his teachers to be good boy suddenly assault a dude just because he was reaching for his cellphone? By slamming his head against the sidewalk no less, how did the dude not get a concussion or not get knocked out by such force? Such bullshit, he got through all that pain and he got up to shoot Martin? This smells like the police trying to cover up shit to make them look less competent.
Something is very fishy here.
lmao yeah i'm really going to trust the police in this case when they've acted like zimmerman's fuckign defense attorney every step of the way.
lmao yeah i'm really going to trust the police in this case when they've acted like zimmerman's fuckign defense attorney every step of the way.
How have the acted like his defense attorney? Because they are taking the side of self defense based on what evidence they have?

AFAIK Zimmerman was just some rent a cop neighborhood watch guy. Police even told him not to follow Martin. The police's hands are clean in this, they don't need to protect Zimmerman. At least, as far as I know of the story they don't.
You guys do know that this is Zimmerman's account, right? And that he isn't exactly the most trustworthy source for this?
This is corroborated by a witness as well. The only different take on this might be Martin's side of the story, and unfortunately he isn't alive to give it. When you only have two people who say the same thing happened, and when you have physical evidence to back up that claim, you have to go with that story.
You guys do know that this is Zimmerman's account, right? And that he isn't exactly the most trustworthy source for this?
Why shouldn't the other side of the story be taken into consideration? You could say that neither side "is the most trustworthy source". No one should be bandwagoning and declaring this man to be guilty before the evidence is in and the courts have actually decided he is guilty. A major idea behind our justice system is that you're supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.
You guys do know that this is Zimmerman's account, right? And that he isn't exactly the most trustworthy source for this?
It does seem to fit the physical evidence on Zimmerman's body though:
When police arrived less than two minutes later, Zimmerman was bleeding from the nose, had a swollen lip and had bloody lacerations to the back of his head

Why would the police try and cover it up? AFAIK Zimmerman was just some rent a cop neighborhood watch guy. Police even told him not to follow Martin. I think Martin did throw the first punch, but only because Zimmerman instigated him. For Zimmerman to get so badly injured (as claimed), I think Martin would've needed to make the first, surprise move to gain the advantage. Just my two cents based on the current evidence.
Zimmerman still had over 100lbs on the kid. Inb4 size doesn't matter.
they are protecting Zimmerman, though. it doesn't matter if they "need to". the police have absolutely fucking botched this case
If there is no motivation for the claim, and little evidence to support that claim, then it's pretty ridiculous to just make the assumption.
they are protecting Zimmerman, though. it doesn't matter if they "need to". the police have absolutely fucking botched this case
How exactly have they botched the case and how do you know they are biased towards helping Zimmerman?
Zimmerman still had over 100lbs on the kid. Inb4 size doesn't matter.
Haven't you ever seen fat kids get picked on and beat up in school by people half their size?
Zimmerman still had over 100lbs on the kid. Inb4 size doesn't matter.
It...doesn't? I've gotten the shit kicked out of me by people who weigh far less than me, and I've beaten people who weigh far more.
they corrected witnesses they misrepresented what trayvon's parents said about the cries for help on the phone call they, for some reason, refer to zimmerman as an "upstanding citizen"(why even fucking do this in the first place? this isn't your fucking job) despite his violent criminal record
Bill Lee who made the statement has stepped down from the case. And what is this about correcting a witness? I attempted to research it but couldn't find anything.

They more or less just let him go because of the 'law' while a kid lays dead. Do you guys know what's like getting your head slammed against concrete? It isn't like the films where you can get off without effort. When a kid socks you then repeatedly slam your head against the concrete sidewalk, you're not getting up, much less shooting another dude.
they are protecting Zimmerman, though. it doesn't matter if they "need to". the police have absolutely fucking botched this case
Florida police officers are laughably incompetent when they have to deal with something other then drug arrests and car accidents.
How have the acted like his defense attorney? Because they are taking the side of self defense based on what evidence they have?
And when they ran out of evidence they made some. Their "evidence" that it was Zimmerman screaming was supposedly a statement from Martin's dad saying the voice in the recording wasn't his son, a statement he has made clear he didn't make, and a fact he has made clear is false.
