The Sims 4 is getting three big additions in as many months, developer Electronic Arts just announced. The first, launching today, brings ghost Sims back into the mix. Next month, the game will get swimming pools. And come December, Sims will get some new careers. All will be free for Sims 4 players.
I tend to defend EA, but even I thought pools would be in a paid-for DLC, like "Summer adventure items DLC" or something. That's cool of them to give something so demanded for free. Kind of disproves the theory they took them out for money, too, since it's well, free. :v:

That's what they want you to think. If it wasn't for the huge backlash in the first place they would have sold that as DLC.
Well it beats paying for expansion packs like in the old days
Idk how long the free stuff is gonna last though
This strikes me as completely planned. There's no way that EA didn't expect there to be backlash, so they're using this in an attempt to show people that they've "changed" by releasing free updates.

It won't. It's just a response to the backlash. EA being EA.
So it really must've been a case of "not done yet but game has to go gold", and not "let's see what we can filter out for DLC".
That's good.
they were putting free shit in as far back as the sims 3, you guys saying they're just doing this outta backlash should read those patch notes.

yep it's all a big marketing scam !! :)
who cares if it is i'm all for free stuff
It's nice to see them rolling out monthly content updates to the base game over the system they had in The Sims 3 where the content only came out alongside expansions.
They might change back to The Sims 3 way of doing it, but it would be neat if they didn't.

they did a bunch of free DLCs with simcity 5 when it came out too
i find it interesting that a feature that was technologically impossible is now suddenly not...
at least they somewhat listen to us
But by releasing free updates they've changed.
One step forward, two steps back.

I don't recall "impossible" ever being the case. The only things I've seen are how they wanted to build a stable foundation for the game and that it didn't fit their vision at the time, and all that PR stuff. I don't think they would say it's impossible.

I thought it wasn't to do with the technology, but rather the vision they had for the game?
Someone needs to post a quote and source about why they didn't include the pools
yep it's all a big marketing scam !! :)

Bcause if there wasn't a big fuss there wouldn't be any 'free stuff', so I care. They are clearly in full damage control mode, and it's incredibly annoying when EA were starting to get their shit together. Christ, all of this stuff was READY TO SHIP, all the while they told consumers that POOLS WERE TOO DIFFICULT. Seriously, what the fuck EA.

Sims 3 received a LOT of free updates as well. Not just bug fixes, features from the expansion packs would be added to the base game.
Still not interested in Sims 4 though, even if it does run like ass, the open world of Sims 3 has spoiled any return to the old Sims 2 style lots for me, the lack of Create a style doesn't sit well with me either.
Can't fault them for wanting to try for a change, but Sims 4 really seems like it took a step down and landed between Sims 2 and Sims 3.

They did win "worst company" twice, so they kinda gotta work on their image.
Oh look, EA did something again so it has to be criticized regardless of its effect or intention.
I still miss style creator. I know they say it's a performance issue, but if the problem is storing many textures into memory, at least let us have custom colors. Wouldn't it then simply be vertex color shading?
Oh look, EA did something again so it has to be criticized regardless of its effect or intention.
Well it's not my fault that EA keep doing stupid backpedals.
Someone needs to post a quote and source about why they didn't include the pools

"It begins with new technology and systems that we built for this new base game for The Sims – a new AI system, new animation system, new audio positioning tools, new locomotion logic, new routing intelligence and much more are all entirely new in this game. The vision for The Sims 4 is a new experience that brings your Sims to life in deeper and uniquely personal ways – through emotions, personality traits, behaviors and interactions. To do that, our technology base needed a major upgrade.
"So the bottom line is that when we sat down and looked at everything we wanted to do for this game, all the new tech we wanted to build into it, the fact was that there would be trade-offs, and these would disappoint some of our fans. Hard pill to swallow, believe me, but delivering on the vision set out for The Sims 4 required focus," she continued. "Focus on revolutionizing the Sims themselves.
"So, rather than include toddlers, we chose to go deeper on the features that make Sims come alive: meaningful and often amusing emotions; more believable motion and interactions; more tools in Create A Sim, and more realistic (and sometimes weird!) Sim behavior. Instead of pools, we chose to develop key new features in Build Mode: direct manipulation, building a house room-by-room and being able to exchange your custom rooms easily, to make the immediate environment even more relatable and interactive for your Sim," Franklin said.
Literally just 'we put our time and effort towards more useful things'. Not really backpedaling, it looks like they'll just be investing their time when it goes gold or post-launch on developing the features they didn't have time to include on release.
Well it's not my fault that EA keep doing stupid backpedals.
How is this different than what they did in The Sims 3?
I thought it was pretty obvious EA was just pushing maxis for time to get the game out, not that they'd purposely not added pools to attempt to sell later on.
i find it interesting that a feature that was technologically impossible is now suddenly not...
they said that because they wrote a brand new engine they'd have to rewrite every feature. It was impossible to just port features like everyone just assumed they'd have to do. Pools are oddly complex due to the way pathing works between tiles and the pools weren't priority for launch features, so it was left behind for a while.
That's the whole reason. Everyone was way too busy jerking each other off over how EA's totally evil to pay attention and even though they took the best course of action in bringing pools about pretty fast, those same people are whining that it's an evil plot to keep getting money
Well it's not my fault that EA keep doing stupid backpedals.
How is it a backpedal exactly?
How is it a backpedal exactly?
Because it's EA
How is it a backpedal exactly?
Not a backpedal: "Oh we're not releasing these features now because it's hard but maybe in a patch some time later"
Backpedal: "Oh you'know those features we weren't going to add? We TOTALLY are! And like really really soon after release"
I'm not an anti-EA guy by any means but it doesn't mean they don't still try to cover up their mistakes. Because they are mistakes. Sure, people get free stuff now. Awesome! But it's still a fuckup.
Well it beats paying for expansion packs like in the old days
Idk how long the free stuff is gonna last though
Well the free shit listed there goes up to the end of the year so I bet they were like "alright we got a huge amount of backlash for this, lets make the main complaints free until the end of year, and when we've won them back, hit them with the paid dlc."
