America's capital may be renamed "New Colombia" if it were to become the 51st state
A commission working out the logistics of Washington, D.C.'s bid for statehood decided this week if they’re successful in becoming the 51st state, it should be called “New Columbia,” the Washington Post reported.
New Columbia beat out suggestions like “the State of Washington, D.C.,” “Anacostia,” “Douglass Commonwealth” and “Potomac,” according to WAMU, American University radio in Washington. It emerged as the victor in part because voters have technically already approved it once — in 1982, another time Washingtonians pushed to become a state.
“It’s the only name that’s even been voted on by the people of the District of Columbia,” shadow Sen. Michael Brown told WAMU. “For 34 years, people have used this name to push this movement forward.”
Brown is just one member of the statehood commission, which, in addition to approving the new name, drafted a constitution this week. The members hope the statehood issue will be debated at the Democratic National Convention July 25-28 in Philadelphia and pick up steam from there. Eventually, they plan to hold a citywide vote and petition Congress for recognition, according to the campaign’s website.
:nope:
I'm not so sure about "New Columbia". Initials-wise it'd clash with North Carolina.
That doesn't really work though
NC is North Carolina

DAMMIT
What's wrong with Columbia State? Why does it have to be "New Columbia" when there's no "Old Columbia"?
I think Potomac sounds better.
Makes me think of Bioshock Infinite. Next thing you know we'll be electing Comstock and Washington DC will float away on giant balloons.
What's the merit of becoming a state here?
Makes me think of Bioshock Infinite. Next thing you know we'll be electing Comstock and Washington DC will float away on giant balloons.
Would be the best outcome for the rest of the country tbh
"the state of washington, DC" was 100% suggested by someone who forgot that washington is already a state.
please, can't stand people assuming washington means DC, pisses me off
What's the merit of becoming a state here?
They have no legal representation in Congress.
They have one person that meets in Congress, but has zero ability to vote on any bills in federal government.
If they gained statehood, they would gain a single representative and two senators.
Right now, they are ironically having taxation without representation.

As oppose to New Colombia and conflicting with North Carolina?
They just can't win with these dumb names.
They should just call themselves a commonwealth anyway.
I'm not so sure about "New Columbia". Initials-wise it'd clash with North Carolina.
It'll probably stick to DC anyway just because of that tbh
[editline]2nd July 2016[/editline]
Oh, I forgot, Congress has direct rule over Washington DC instead of its local government. Another perk of statehood would be actual self-rule.
New "Colombia"?
I assume this is mocking the morons that spell that country as 'Columbia'.
please, can't stand people assuming washington means DC, pisses me off
it does seem at times like we're just seattle and native americans to the rest of the nation
I'm not so sure about "New Columbia". Initials-wise it'd clash with North Carolina.
"Col" / "NCo" / "NC 2.0"
"Col" / "NCo" / "NC 2.0"
Pretty sure it's standardized to be only two letters.
Where are we even supposed to tack on a 51st star should DC become a state.

Why not CL? Or just keep it as DC. This could be voted upon and isn't that hard to work around.
What's wrong with Columbia State? Why does it have to be "New Columbia" when there's no "Old Columbia"?
Columbia is already the name of a state capital and would cause confusion internationally consdering the number of states and regions and places already with this toponym.
I think Potomac sounds better.
D.C. is more than just the river it's on, plus this would also cause confusion, however convenient the name.
Makes me think of Bioshock Infinite. Next thing you know we'll be electing Comstock and Washington DC will float away on giant balloons.
This is an implausible outcome.
What's the merit of becoming a state here?
Allows the population of D.C. representation in congress, probably would also get to vote sooner in primaries I would bet, amongst other things.
Would be the best outcome for the rest of the country tbh
Would be bad for the hundreds of thousands of Americans who live in the city itself and the millions who commute and spend/earn money in the district. You are wrong.
"the state of washington, DC" was 100% suggested by someone who forgot that washington is already a state.
This is a likely and possible scenario.
please, can't stand people assuming washington means DC, pisses me off
This has always been troublesome for me as well.
"Col" / "NCo" / "NC 2.0"
I hate you. These are implausible.

You're right, we should break the standard and call it "NNC" aka "Not North Carolina" instead
OR W2 "Washington 2"

If they're going to do that, they have to make Puerto Rico a state as well.
It's obvious that North and South Dakota should settle their differences and merge, which means no need to change the flag!
If they're going to do that, they have to make Puerto Rico a state as well.
If only. That seems like it's been on the backburner for ever and unlikely to ever come off of it
Puerto Rico should be a full fledged state by now and it's a little laughable it still hasn't happened.
don't worry when texas finally secedes from the us we won't need to change the flag anyways
that's happening guys just wait
If they're going to do that, they have to make Puerto Rico a state as well.
You can't force a place to become a state.
And PR don't want to anyway.

DC gets screwed a lot by congress. This would keep those assholes from controlling them and using them as tools in their bickering.

From your own source:
But hundreds of thousands of voters left the second question blank, meaning actual support for statehood could be less than 50 percent. (In the days following the vote, one congressional aide told a newspaper that the 61 percent vote for statehood was seen by some congressional members as “statistical fiction.”)

Even if the people aren't sure yet, they're fiscal situation is a result of their lack of statehood in large part as far as I understand the situation.

Irrelevant, they still don't want statehood even despite their economic status by your own source.
