More than four years ago, Steve Jobs declared war on Flash and heralded HTML5 as the way to go. You could be forgiven if you thought the HTML5 standard — the follow-up to 1997’s HTML 4 — has long been set in stone, given that developers, browser vendors and the press have been talking about it for years now. In reality, however, HTML5 was still in flux — until today. The W3C today published its Recommendation of HTML5 — the final version of the standard after years of adding features and making changes to it.
As a user, you won’t notice any changes. Chances are your browser already supports most HTML5 features like the <video> element and vector graphics (unless your employer forces you to use a really old version of Internet Explorer, that is). Other important new features that HTML5 has brought to the web over the last few years are things like the <canvas> element for rendering 2D shapes and bitmap images, support for MathML for displaying mathematical notations in the browser, and APIs for everything from offline caching to drag-and-drop support.
“Today we think nothing of watching video and audio natively in the browser, and nothing of running a browser on a phone,” said Tim Berners-Lee, the W3C director, in a statement today. “We expect to be able to share photos, shop, read the news, and look up information anywhere on any device. Though they remain invisible to most users, HTML5 and the Open Web Platform are driving these growing user expectations.”
Now everyone can start building their shitty HTML extensions again!
I could have sworn Steve Jobs died more than four years ago.

Please don't.
The asshole who designed whatever tidbit of HTML5 that these kinds of websites use needs to be investigated for insider trading. They must have had stock in Logitech because scroll wheel replacements have gone through the fucking roof thanks to that shitbag.
I'll be ecstatic when that trend is over.

Works great on my laptop touchpad though. :v:

Stop I literally just made one of those websites lol
Oh wow haven't heard the name "flash" in a while.
Do they still do flash animations? that was like youtube before youtube.

Is that a video in the fifth section? It gets spectacularly choppy when I scroll at that part (that's probably just Firefox though).

To be honest, I just middle-click and scroll. It's probably how they wanted people to scroll anyways, but only 1% of the internet probably uses middle-clicking.

As a student studying web-design, I suppose I should try not doing the whole parallax scrolling deal. Thought it was just me that was getting tired of those types of sites.

Yes that is a video. This is the first I've heard of it being choppy, I've tested it on Chrome and Firefox so strange. The video is only like 1.14mb total.

I also have smooth scrolling on, so normally it goes from 60 fps to like 20 fps then back to 60 again.
Don't worry we still will have to develop for old versions of ie for a good while.
I always wondered what the phasing out of flash was going to mean for flash animators in particular. Is there some newer alternative that's being used by them? I'm pretty out of the loop.

HTML4 has it's share of indescribably long webpages, but that's just incompetent web design, whereas when HTML5 does it it's more acceptable for some reason.
Remember when Javascript/ActiveX enabled shit like this?
Stop I literally just made one of those websites lol
Frankly, that would be much better as a narrated video or a plain old essay. Sites like that are best-suited for bullshit marketing (literally, the marketing of bullshit that nobody needs).
To be honest, I just middle-click and scroll. It's probably how they wanted people to scroll anyways, but only 1% of the internet probably uses middle-clicking.
But that defeats the purpose unless you scroll extremely slowly. These sites are designed like one of those old paranoid crazy-person websites from the 90s where there is content strewn across the page and you have to scroll forever. You can't just skip to the end, you have to go through the whole thing, otherwise you'll just miss the content anyway.
The difference is, for these sites, you could probably fit all of the content on a single screen. That's just taboo for web designers now; everything has to be designed for tablets. Big flat buttons, too much padding... the old days were better. :grandpa:
Cool, but we're still going to need to spam our CSS with
-webkit-function
-moz-function
-o-function
function
, and our HTML5-using features with javascript fallbacks, to support older versions. So I don't see it that important.

the worst is when they have those navbar menus that scroll you to part of the page. On any other website that navbar would take you to a new page, but no, this page is [del]retarded[/del] fancy.
Not sure what's wrong with flash, I doubt html5 is better.

And then you try to go back and suddenly end up with your previous page.
I honestly hate those websites with passion (also any button that takes me to a new page without changing the page)

Everything is wrong with flash.
Most modern PCs can run HTML5 fine now.
Html5 is a clusterfuck of technologies slapped together.
It's cool though.
I just wish there was a way to make webpages that adapt to the screen you use. Since I got a widescreen monitor it's been a huge pet peeve of mine to see page after page where only the middle third has content, with the left and right sides blank. It's 2014, why are webpages still designed for 14" 4:3 CRTs? Even my phone has an HD widescreen.
I'm pretty sure most of them have moved to youtube.
They still use flash to actually make the animations though.
Not sure what's wrong with flash, I doubt html5 is better.
There's a lot wrong with Flash. It's a third-party, closed source extension to most browsers for one. The performance impact of it is also quite noticeable when compared to a browser that implements HTML 5 properly. You shouldn't be using Flash for information or design, that's not why Flash exists.
As for those over the top scrolling site things (I personally don't mind them, the design idea behind them is actually really cool, but the implementations are all weird). That has little to do with HTML 5, that's a CSS 3/ JS thing. Don't blame the markup for the presentation. We aren't using HTML < 4.01 any more.

Welcome to the world of 960px. A design style that has stuck for quite a time. Most websites that use it now do have responsive design stuff for widescreens, but responsive design can be a pain to do so a lot of people leave it out or just don't do it.

better still, why is the most common aspect ratio for monitors today 16:9? 16:10 is way, way better
also, webms really need to phase out gifs

If you're still manually adding browser prefixes to your CSS, you need to look into Sass + Compass, LESS + Bourbon, and/or CSS autoprefixer.
[editline]28th October 2014[/editline]
Also, they will be needed much less as modern (read as auto-updating) browsers take over the browser share.
