Wii U is basically Dreamcast 2 at this point. Screen in the controller, a crazy-unique library with a whole bunch of unorthodox titles, and the entire gaming industry scoffing at it and ravenously egging on its demise for its entire lifespan. Losing the fight for the Wii U stung badly, and I still resent how Nintendo marketed and priced the damn thing because of how doing so condemned it to an early grave. While Switch provides a fresh start for the Off-TV Play concept, I can't help but lament all the second-screen potential that we lose. Even if Nintendo themselves are moving on, I wish somebody still cared about the Wii U. Even if it weren't a Nintendo system, I'm a big fan of the Wii U itself and its concept, and I hate how the poor thing was stomped all over from day one.
Anyone know the name of the 3D cartoon at 8:45 ? I watched that when I was a kid, but don't remember the name.
reboot
So if Switch can basically become a home device or a portable, what will become of the 3DS?
So if Switch can basically become a home device or a portable, what will become of the 3DS?
I'd say it lasts through 2017, due to developers being slow and all that, but by 2018 we'll probably see those devs move to the NS and the 3DS will shutter down.
Honestly I still use my 3DS a fair bit, mostly as a music player and pedometer at this point though. I would still recommend getting one if you haven't, it has a lot of great games (AND DS games) for it.

But then again, you'll be hard-pressed to find gamers these days who care about local. Not when modern gamer culture slams Nintendo - the purveyor of the image of four friends gathered around a TV - for having "no multiplayer" because some of their games still aren't online. That said, when you still have self-proclaimed "true gamers" out there who believe Nintendo still uses friend codes, I don't know how you reach those people. Gamers believe what they want to.
Doesn't it make more financial sense for Nintendo to keep having a separated home console and portable console? Lots of fans will get both eventually, except now they're risking loosing some casual people who would've gotten a new DS or whatever but just assume the Switch is a more home console product. Personally, I find it more appealing that its all in one though so maybe that's what they're hoping people will see.
I wish Nintendo would make a console and game library that would compete with MS and Sony.
I wish Nintendo would make a console and game library that would compete with MS and Sony.
it's clear that nintendo is not interested in doing that at all, they know that consistently making good first-party exclusives for their own console makes the purchase already worth it for many people
I wish Nintendo would make a console and game library that would compete with MS and Sony.
They can make the library, but they can't make an identical console because it wouldn't sell because Nintendo can't compete with the audience that wants a PS4 or Xbox because of their brand identity, and then people would criticise then for making an identical console anyway because Nintendo can't win no matter what. So fuck it , might as well make a unique console with its own niche and separate audience.
They can make the library, but they can't make an identical console because it wouldn't sell, and then people would criticise then for making an identical console.
i think it goes either way, people already criticize them for making weird gimmicky consoles
So fuck it , might as well make a unique console with its own niche and separate audience.
nintendo was always known for pulling that shit and as far as i know it's been working out for them
it's clear that nintendo is not interested in doing that at all, they know that consistently making good first-party exclusives for their own console makes the purchase already worth it for many people
I agree, I honestly got the Wii U because of the Nintendo games, not for graphical power or whatever features the other consoles have. Only issue I have is their online stuff...they seem to be missing things. I'm just using Splatoon as an example but there's no voice chat at all, not even between friends or anything, and if I remember correctly with a few other Nintendo games setting up the online parts are kind of bizarre. Like friend codes for instance. I wish you could just add them from the game. This might be incorrect but I'm pretty sure you need the friend code always, and not all games have it really easily available. I guess I want the more social parts of online play to work better and easier.

Wii U had full Nintendo Network accounts from the beginning and 3DS switched over soon after. It's been a half-decade since then, can we drop the complaints about friend codes already? They literally don't even exist anymore. You can't even say how Wii and DS still use them because their online has been shut down for years now. And Wii U literally has an option to add people you recently played with, by going into Friends from the Home Menu.
I wish Nintendo would make a console and game library that would compete with MS and Sony.
Except if they did they, people would go "Oh god, more of the same." At least its something different. I don't know if it'll work, but its different..
I'd rather nintendo be nintendo but make a proper video game platform like the gamecube again like.. the wii was neat and the wii u was an interesting experiment but the switch looks like they're going back to that a bit. I just hope that is the case.
I wish Nintendo would make a console and game library that would compete with MS and Sony.
Well, first-party wise they are clearly ahead.
*sigh* This is what I mean. No, we haven't had friend codes since the early 3DS days back in 2011. Oh, you made a NNID for your 3DS to use online features on that? Well, you can't use that NNID to access Nintendo's websites or play Miitomo until you link it to a general Nintendo account, and you can't make a new general Nintendo account with the same email you used for your 3DS NNID because it'll show up as already in use. Have fun spending hours trying to figure out how to do anything! Nintendo are still far, far behind when it comes to online services compared to both Microsoft and Sony. They're fine ignoring them for every other aspect of their hardware and software, but please, for the love of God, look at how simple and easy to use their online system is and COPY THAT.

Everything for me is pretty seamless.
Nintendo are never going to make traditional videogame consoles again, that market is shrinking. Nintendo have by far the most successful handheld systems, so it makes sense that they put all their focus on that.
Shrinking? It's not like the PS4 and Xbox One sold no units man...
Shrinking? It's not like the PS4 and Xbox One sold no units man...
Exactly what he means- the people who bought PS4s and XB1s are off the market, and thus it shrinks. Even if you've waited this long for a new console, you're probably gonna get it on the systems your friends are on, and thus are also off this new console marketplace. If Nintendo tried to make one of those consoles, 3 years into this cycle, they'd get creamed even more than they were with the Wii U.

Or is that one of the many options to add people now? I own both the systems and I didn't even know you could add people like that lol.
I wish Nintendo would make a console and game library that would compete with MS and Sony.
atm the PS4 and Xbox One hardly have enough distinct titles that aren't cross-platform so there's not much of a competition is there

Either way, the Switch won't have friendcodes, so rejoice!
