here's a thread where you can post your favorite scenes/parts/directors/etc... and talk about why you like them so much
you can do a big post or just link a video and write out a sentence or two, it doesn't really matter!
example post:
tarkovsky
one of the most unique things i can pick up from watching tarkovsky's movies is his distinctive pacing and "freeform" structure. stuff like holding one shot for a really long time or changing the hues for one scene aren't unique but it's the way tarkovsky kinda pieces them together into this one really long film that makes him special. it's difficult to swallow at first since your brain tries to figure exactly why the heck he's doing it for and what exactly those directional choices are supposed to symbolise. like filming a car ride in tokyo for like 15 minutes straight or holding a shot of a couple of dudes sitting for 10 minutes or suddenly making the next scene black and white. combine those confusions with the fact that tarkovsky avoided symbolism as much as he possibly could, i can get why his films are difficult to sit through.
however once you get swept up by tarkovsky's intention of making movies as almost meditative and spiritual/thoughtful journeys, you begin to understand that tarkovsky probably does all those things for incredibly simple but raw reasons. it's less about what that scene is supposed to "mean" but more about how it's affecting you and what it makes you think. it's nearly all about tarkovsky trying to make you feel, think and question things and not about you spending weeks figuring out what the magical director is symbolising. he lulls you into a dreamy meditative state with his long shots, dream like scenes, and silence and hopes that you'll be changed, even a little, when his movie is over. this is why each viewing of his movies feels different than the last time (for me anyway) because he knows that while his films can't change, you can.
