Hold on, I think I'm going to need about two weeks of careful analysis before I understand what Stephen is talking about.
I love that it's Bill Corbett's tweet he reads. Bill Corbett was the voice of Crow on MST3K, if you don't know.
This is great.
I like how he pretends to read out an anonymous question and always points out Greg.
Thought he was going to point out the poster art blade.

His analysis is still good nerdery though.
Damn, he made me like the saber more now
Stephen Colbert doesn't just follow the canon, he makes the canon.
he stole my thoughts
obviously Stephen is a Jedi himself. So much so he learned how to read minds using the Force.
What if you cut your own arm off with the two additional blades?
What if you cut your own arm off with the two additional blades?
you'd be a very piss poor jedi
henry cooldown did horizontal hilt lasers better if you ask me
that lady screaming though

You mean wookie.
Actually it sounded more like r2 than anything:

The way i saw someone describe it and fully agree with was that it's not designed for the normal lightsaber styles anymore than dual wielding lightsabers, lightstaves, double ended lightsabers, etc are designed for it. Normal lightsaber styles are kinda like fighting with a short sword whereas the blade on the new one is clearly massively long, reaching off screen, making it more of a longsword and thus would be used for long sweeps and heavy hits to take advantage of the reach rather than the normal acrobatic, close defense lightsaber styles. Makes sense to me, at least.

Though i agree that i can't think of a decently practical use for it except as a proper crossguard, which never happened at all in the other six movies, don't see why i'd matter now.
Maybe it's like that stupid fucking "Inquisitor's" lightsaber from that one new TV show, where it can be taken off and thrown.

Devotchka, I don't see any issue with that blade. It's basically a double sided lightsaber with he middle cut and placed on a spinning circle, honestly it's only been used for shock and awe tactics, seeing as not everyone like like Grevious and has four arms.
Also I remember how everybody said they wanted to be nerds, and how they were nerds, and how nerdy they were for reading books and buying fake glasses, but suddenly when somebody makes a comment about the strange look of the new lightsaber, everyone goes batshit defensive mode. I thought we were above this.

What's the point of having the casings in the first place if they're designed to break off anyway?
What's the point of having the casings in the first place if they're designed to break off anyway?
reverse psychology
I still stick with "it's a shittily constructed lightsaber so it needs to vent extra laser" theory.
its only one lightsaber so far you idiots

It's only a problem from the top. If you want those bits there to protect your hands the top part doesn't matter at all. It'd almost be a waste of time to cut it off yourself just to make it ornate.
i dont understand why people are making such a big deal out of it
[editline]3rd December 2014[/editline]
like, its a space laser sword
Trying to put practical logic into a weapon we haven't even invented yet........
I pretty much thought that's how it works. The thing is if you use it as flexibly and as fast as we've seen won't you injure yourself with the mini ones?
Also, it's a film.
I still like the theory where the reason why these 2 little beams are there are because the wielder has such anger from after what he all experienced from the war that his saber needs 2 'vents' to vent out the excessive energy that he pushes through the lightsaber.
I love how people actually care about the practicability of a light saber. It's literally the most over engineered and under performing weapon they could have designed. Why not just use a ranged weapon instead? There is no scene in the 6 movies where a good blaster would have been worse (in the right hands).
Two extra beams aren't going to ruin it.

Knowing the Star Wars fanbase, people have studied every single frame of that teaser to look for things so something like that is not something that would go down easily.
