• Visible from space: Curiosity tire tracks on Mars.

NASA's robotic rover Curiosity is making its mark on Mars. Its tracks are big enough to be seen from space.

In just one month, it's driven 368 feet on the red planet, slightly more than the length of a football field. Curiosity's slightly zig-zaggy tire tracks were photographed by a NASA satellite circling Mars and also from the rover's rear-facing cameras.
-------------------- This color view of the parachute and back shell that helped deliver NASA's Curiosity rover to the surface of the Red Planet was taken by the High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The area where the back shell impacted the surface is darker because lighter-colored material on the surface was kicked up and displaced. Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Univ. of Arizona.
The spacecraft landed on Aug. 5 on a mission to look for ingredients that could support life. Mission manager Michael Watkins said Thursday that the rover team gave each other high fives when the images arrived.
-------------------- This map shows the route driven by NASA's Mars rover Curiosity through the 29th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's mission on Mars (Sept. 4, 2012). The route starts where the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft placed the rover, a site subsequently named Bradbury Landing. The line extending toward the right (eastward) from Bradbury Landing is the rover's path. Numbering of the dots along the line indicate the sol numbers of each drive. North is up. The scale bar is 200 meters (656 feet). By Sol 29, Curiosity had driven at total of 358 feet (109 meters). At the location reached by the Sol 29 drive, the rover began several sols of arm characterization activities. The Glenelg area farther east is the mission's first major science destination, selected as likely to offer a good target for Curiosity's first analysis of powder collected by drilling into a rock. The image used for the map is from an observation of the landing site by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Engineers will spend the next week checking out the rover's crucial robotic arm and scientific instruments.
-------------------- This scene shows the surroundings of the location where NASA Mars rover Curiosity arrived on the 29th Martian day, or sol, of the rover's mission on Mars (Sept. 4, 2012). It is a mosaic of images taken by Curiosity's Navigation Camera (Navcam) following the Sol 29 drive of 100 feet (30.5 meters). Tracks from the drive are visible in the image. For scale, Curiosity leaves parallel tracks about 9 feet (2.7 meters) apart. At this location on Sol 30, Curiosity began a series of activities to test and characterize the rover's robotic arm and the tools on the arm. The panorama is centered to the north-northeast, with south-southwest at both ends. that's awesome, can't believe we actually have something over there that we can control
that's awesome, can't believe we actually have something over there that we can control
This, this , and a billion times this.
In just one month, it's driven 368 feet on the red planet, slightly more than the length of a football field.
An average speed of 0.00009 miles per hour Gotta go fast?
Sheeple, how are you not aware that this is all just a ploy created by the illuminati. They hired the top cold war secret agents to create a small red hologram, and edited all textbooks to add mars, to keep you guys unaware. NASA is actually a code name for "neural attack shockwave artillery," which is a sub branch of the army, hidden in the sixth side of the pentagon. While you fools are busy looking up at the sky, a war is being fought with advanced tech in the second layer of the grand canyon. The mole people are attempting to break the outer tunnel to liberate our world. You can trust me, for I am a mole.

"arizona desert hoax" this, motherfuckers
Where's all the Martian trees? What a waste of $2.5 billion no its an actual conspiracy theory, but thanks for the dumbs anyways
There's a place in Scotland called Glenelg... go there at least once a year since I was about 3. I wonder why they named the place on Mars Glenelg too.
Would have been neat if they'd loaded the skycrane with heaps of explosives. so when it crashed it triggered a big old explosion and exposed heaps of bare and previously undisturbed earth
we need to draw something on mars I'm officially creating the FacePunch Space Program (FPSP) to give it the FP logo EDIT: not the moon holy fuck I'm dumb
http://www.facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=886143
wasn't there a guy who wanted to make a micronation with a space program? people where like "I'll donate 5$
we need to draw something on the moon I'm officially creating the FacePunch Space Program (FPSP) to give it the FP logo
Mr. T is that you?
that's awesome, can't believe we actually have something over there that we can control
Why are everyone acting like this is a first? I still don't get it.

368 feet? Y'know, when I heard the thing was the size of an SUV and had these big damn tires, I rather expected it would use bleeding-edge path-detection AI to rove the surface for miles. I didn't expect it to travel so slowly and carefully I could literally CRAWL faster...
The last thing they want is to get a 2.5 billion dollar rover stuck somewhere.

I didn't expect it to travel so slowly and carefully I could literally CRAWL faster...
It seems counter-intuitive, but if something goes wrong, it will take NASA 14 minutes to find out, and it would be 14 more minutes before the rover would react. This all has to go slowly.
Its a conspiracy, why would I believe it?
not to give unwarranted validity to the specific theory in question, but you do realize how incredibly idiotic saying that is right?

Shit,Mars has much more no athmosphere then i though.
