I had the pleasure of playing in a wind orchestra, and on some occasions, we had to march.
Playing your instrument while marching and keeping the distance and the formation is a [b]real[/b] pain in the ass. Especially if one plays an instrument like the tuba, like me...

It's called a [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corps_of_Drums]Corps of Drums[/url].
They play the five-key flute (Bb Flute generally), not the piccolo; although there's bound to be a couple in the band. It's almost like a piccolo, but not as high pitched.
