AfD defectors led by Frauke Petry hint at breakaway party
Two breakaway members of Germany's right-wing AfD party seem set on forming a separate faction in the Bundestag parliament and even a new party. But a freshly elected AfD leader says the move is "doomed to failure."
But Alice Weidel, who was elected co-leader of the party caucus on Tuesday evening, retorted that an AfD rival would be "doomed to failure."
Petry, 42, walked out on Weidel and two other AfD leaders, Alexander Gauland and Jörg Meuthen, at a post-election press conference in Berlin on Monday. She said that the party needed to take a more moderate and realistic approach, saying it was currently shaping up to be an ineffective "fundamental opposition."
Luckes Party is doing so well right?
Instead of trying to root out the troublemakers inside the party they just split themselves into irrelevance.
No surprise, if I remember correctly it has happened before.
Happens when you have some "hardcore right" people but try to appeal to the typical citizen who doesn't like Merkel and her refugee politics.
Just to name one of the "one issue" groups that voted AfD.
I suppose it is mostly good news seeing the AfD break on their own.
Although I do hope that this doesn't make the rest of the AfD more radical then some of their members already are and that they use this to do some actual harm with their seats.
