"There were 40 kids. If it wasn't for the good Samaritan stepping forward, he'd have been dead meat," Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. "There's no doubt they would have attacked him."
That afternoon alone, police responded to three fights in three locations near the school. When the dust settled, eight teens, ages 13 to 17, were charged with crimes, and two officers were injured so severely that it's unclear when they'll be able to return to work, Chitwood said.
Fucking Savages..
He was probably actually hunting those poor, innocent, helpless little children like all gun owners do yearly in order to maintain their status as NRA members. If any of them were black he's also an evil racist.

Were they kids or teens? The only ages mentioned are that of teens.
We classify teens as kids, here.
No wonder we have so much horror fiction about children.

Not legally adult = Kids in most American media
that's some fuckin' clockwork orange shit right there
Not legally adult = Kids in most American media
How do you differentiate between teens and actual kids then?
How do you differentiate between teens and actual kids then?
Typically, over 12 and under 18 gets pegged as "teen"
they mention a lot about high schools in the article, so thats the age i assume them to be.
but thats messed up, seriously, all those fights, and then turning on the people who try to break them up
Fucking Savages..
They're unarmed, they cant do any harm. What are you talking about? The internet was right all along.
How do you differentiate between teens and actual kids then?
It doesn't really matter. The article was informative enough, and a word for 'teen' still exists, and was probably invented in America.
This was like two miles away and I didn't hear about it what
When I heard "a large group of kids" I pictured a swarm of toddlers overpowering the man :v:
Not to mention addressing people in their 20's, or even older, by 'kid' or 'son' by someone older, which frankly doesn't happen much where I'm from, except a priest might say it.
How do you differentiate between teens and actual kids then?
We don't, because it allows us to pass more draconian laws to "save the kids" from things like gang activity they're involved in as teens.

More people are killed with fists and feet than with assault weapons in the US every year.

Im not sure what gave it away but i think it's sarcasm.

I recall reading that the vast, vast majority of gun homicides are done with pistols, not assault weapons. That might be what he's talking about.

Well the intended purpose of a pistol is to kill, unlike rifles which can be used to hunt, so I'd imagine they'd qualify.

Do assault weapons even have a dedicated, accepted definition at this point? Last I knew, it still meant "large mag rifle that looks like it came from the military or something"
Not to get off-track.

Assault weapons are defined under US law by features as apposed to function. That's why it is possible to have two models of the same gun with one being considered an assault rifle and another not. There are some that are named specifically by model, though that is largely dependent on state law.
Typically, over 12 and under 18 gets pegged as "teen"
Based on the sites I go to being a teen is like 18 to 26.
Well the intended purpose of a pistol is to kill, unlike rifles which can be used to hunt
How do you resolve this statement with the huge variety of pistols designed for hunting, widespread use of pistols for hunting, and rifles achieving the goal of hunting by way of killing?
I recall reading that the vast, vast majority of gun homicides are done with pistols, not assault weapons. That might be what he's talking about.
To quickly summarize, there tends to be no distinction between assault weapon and non-assault weapon in homicide statistics. In the US pistol homicides outweigh assault weapon homicides easily by more than 7x. For every person killed with a rifle or shotgun combined (of any variety, not just "assault weapons") there are 7-8 people killed with handguns. There's no differentiating in homicide statistics.

Knives and Blunt objects seem to account for about 2x more homicides than rifles & shotguns combined, not sure if that's changed in recent years but I'd imagine not by much. In general pistols are the #1 weapon of choice for homicide, followed by knives and blunt objects, followed by hands and feet, and then long guns.
American laws for firearm classification are weird. To prove my point, have pictures of what are legally pistols:

But, back on topic: I wonder how this would have gone if not for the civ with the gun; I see two options, either the cop gets brutally beaten (maybe even killed but I don't want to be presumptuous or overly pessimistic) or he pulls his gun and firearms-related shitstorm #452 begins.

People generally think of "long guns" (shotguns and rifles) whenever they use that term.

Assault weapons are defined by a laundry list of arbitrary features such as a Barrel Shroud, which is only used so you don't burn yourself on the hot barrel. According to one of the people pushing to ban these weapons, a barrel shroud is "the shoulder thing that goes up" so that should give you an indication of how well these laws were instituted.
Barrel shroud
Bayonet lug (lots of drive by bayonettings)
Extendable stock
Pistol grip (they say it makes it easier to spray from the hip)
Detachable magazine consisting of 11 or more rounds

Don't forget about the shoulder thing that goes up
