was officially founded on September 16, 1989 by bassist Ueda Kenji. Since its formation they've released 17 studio albums and only found fame after the anime studio Gainax approached them in 1999 with a job offer. They wanted to lease 3 albums for the anime FLCL, and the pillows also recorded 2 tracks for the anime, Ride On Shooting Star, and I think I can.
The members! Former and current
Kenji Ueda Born August 30, 1965. Founding member and bassist from 1989-1992

At age 18, he dropped out of high school at age 18 and went to Tokyo by invitation of a senior Kenzi to play in the punk band Kenzi & The Trips. in 1989 he left the band which subsequently disbanded and He recruited the drummer Shinchiro Sato, for a new band he was forming called the pillows. He recruited Sawao Yamanaka, and Yoshiaki Manabe and the band was formed September 16, 1989. Ueda left the pillows in 1992 due to musical differences. As of right now, Ueda is a producer and started his own label releasing 2 solo albums.
Sawao Yamanaka, born 12/07/1968. The singer from the start.

Before joining the pillows he was in a band called The Coin Locker Babies when Kenji recruited him. He sings, designs t-shirts, and created the Mascot "Buster-kun" who is pictured later in the thread. He was heavily influenced by Simon and Garfunkle, The Beatles, The Jam, and The Pixies (he even named a song after the bassist, Kim Deal.) It was a year after Ueda left and the band wasn't active that he took up the role as band leader, and has been in said position since.

Yoshiaki Manabe born 10/2/1962. Lead guitar from the start.

Yoshiaki Manabe played in a band called Persia, and left to join the pillows when invited by Ueda. Yoshiaki has done programming and mixing for some of the bands albums and has a reggae side project that has released 2 albums under the name Nine Miles, which was the Jamaican village Bob Marley was born in, who is his favorite artist. (He's like a Marley fanatic.)

Shinichiro Sato. Drums from the start. (When is his birthday? :v:)

Drummer since the start, he left Kenji & The Trips to form the pillows with Ueda, and loves the Ukelele. His band-mates calls him Shin-chan.
Jun Suzuki Born 7/18/1968 Bass since 1999

Jun joined in 1999 but isn't called a band member but rather a "support bassist", out of respect for Ueda. Sawao has always had a heart for the original line-up.
Jun also moonlights as a DJ, and the first music video he appeared in was Terminal Heavens Rock. Not to be confused with the girl from that anime I've never heard of.
Tatsuya Kashima, bass 1992-1999

Tatsuya joined after Ueda left the band in 1992. Prior to the pillows, he was a member of super bad.

When the band visited England in the mid/late 90's Sawao found this weird dog/bear-looking toy in the window. He bought the doll and made it the universal symbol for both the band and for the fans. Enough about the members and the history, you're here for the music. the has released more than a dozen original studio albums, along with several EPs, singles and compilations, you can take a gander at all of that here. Now it's time for me to share some of the sound, here is only a select few of their many great songs, I encourage you all to listen to them, because a few of their albums were entire different genres.

TL;DR - Rainbowpillows likes a band a lot and has no idea what they're saying, and felt like sharing it with Facepunch.

I'll probably update the OP with more songs later, assuming I'm not brutalized for making a thread about Japanese music.
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
AND media tags broke. Re-posting songs now :suicide:
Now with a less shit OP! Shout out to Vedicardi
They did the music for FLCL.
They are awesome.
overrated in terms of "j-rock" (that's the last time I will ever type that)
only popular because of FLCL, not that there's anything wrong with that. just sayin
so many overlooked japanese garage punk and indie rock bands.
didn't realize how long these guys have been around though
[editline]15th August 2011[/editline]
only popular in the US, that is
More fame in the US then Japan thanks to weeaboos :v: Still some absolutely gorgeous shit though.
IMO of course.

I don't suppose anyone can tell me why media tags aren't working for me. Is it just me or everyone?

Winner.
Honestly, I only really got into about 4 or 5 songs by them, mostly from their album Happy Bivouac.
But all in all I would have to say my favorite song personally would have to be this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BFO1e2Y65hw&feature=player_detailpage
Carnival original got me into the band when my uncle played it for the first time.
you either have a cool uncle or a pedo uncle
Definitely not a pedo.

I can hardly spell myself but that one was so far off it was hilarious.
:suicide:
Sunday is actually very good, I have been listening to it for some time now.
Sunday is actually very good, I have been listening to it for some time now.
I don't even know what genre you would classify that as. Their lesser known songs are their best songs.
Classify it as fucking awesome!
They actually have 3 Genres.
Alternative rock, Indie rock, and Power pop.
wrong
I have most of the FLCL OST on my zune, fucking amazing stuff

What do you mean?
what difference does it make that they're japs
Some people don't like things because of where they're from. "Oh they're japanese, it's just shitty j-rock"
in which cases it is.
this band went downhill for me since Penalty Life
I love their 1995-1999 work
this band went downhill for me since Penalty Life

I agree actually. I like a few of there songs but I'm more 92-99 myself.
It's weird I like this stuff so much, FLCL introduced me to them (like most people in America) and I have been into them ever since, and what's off about it is that anime is absolute shit. Well not all of it, but a very very VERY large portion of it. Funny a soundtrack from one introduces me to my favorite band.
