Lib Dems destroyed by voters - "Clegg must step down immediately "
103 replies, posted
Nick Clegg is facing calls from the party's local government to 'step down immediately' as the party faced a disaster in the polls, losing 337 Councillors to Labour.
The Liberal Democrats have lost control in most cities, including Nick Clegg's hometown of Sheffield, where all the seats have been lost to Labour.
Ken Ball, leader of the Liberal Democrats on Chorley council, accused Mr Clegg of "letting the party down".
As his council went to no overall control from a Conservative majority, Mr Ball said he had become so disillusioned he might quit the party.
"Nick Clegg has put us back 40 years. After these elections I hope somebody takes his place. He's been a bad PR exercise," he said.
But Mr Cable insisted: "We are not looking at a party (leadership) election. Nick has put up with an enormous amount of personalised abuse and actually I think it will increase support for him within the party."
Mr Clegg told the BBC the Lib Dems were facing "the brunt of the blame" for coalition spending cuts, adding that, for some voters, they were bringing out "memories of things under Thatcher".

i blame the student protesters
:downs:
Hardly surprising.
This is what happens when you enter a coalition with the party the majority of your voters hate.
Good
When will the results for the AV referendum be out? I really hope that the voters haven't decided to piss all over a chance to improve the way democracy works in the U.K just to get back at Clegg.
Also I hope lib dems get back in where I live, its ether them or the conservatives here.
I'm not British so I don't know a lot about British politics, but from what I've seen Nick Clegg seems like a cool guy. I have no idea why people hate him and the Libdems so much.
Also, UKIP and especially BNP most of their seats. That's nice!

I don't think they start counting until 6pm today

I think a lot of young voters, who voted Lib Dem last time, feel betrayed by the whole student loan thing. That's not the only issue but I think it's a pretty sizeable contribution.

It might have something to do with him jumping into bed with The Conservatives.
oh, and turning his back on one of his main policies and in the process, stabbing hundreds of thousands of students in the back.
My consituency has been lib dem for over 18 years and i was surprised to find today that it's now SNP

Also, BNP -8, hooray.
I seriously hope that Scotland doesn't secede from the union, the people who want it are racist bigots whose favorite movie is Braveheart.

The issue people have is that a LOT of people who voted for the liberal democrats did so becuase generally they oppose the tories.
Only to find that after the election Nick Clegg joined in a coalition government with the tories so that the tories didn't have the minority in parliment, this pissed off all the people who voted lib dem to spite the tories.
The fact that Clegg promised no rise to student fees only to green light them being risen pissed off even more people.
So yeah, Clegg blew the first opportunity the lib dems had in the last 50 years.
The AV's being counted! It's half-past four!
I think everyone is very disillusioned with the Lib Dems. They had the majority of the young voters votes for the promises they made about University Fees, amongst other things. Then they join a Coalition and have to submit to the Tory Policy.
Wait, the thing was the 5th, oh balls.

Polls find that more people would vote against it than for it in a straight Yes or No referendum
I don't understand why everyone hates the Libdems, Why don't people realise that cut have to be made because Labour wasted all the money?

8 tonight is the latest prediction. Apparently there has been some issues.
I am worried that not enough people understood it and got swayed by the shitty no campaign (claiming that some people have more than one vote etc)
The Lib Dems entered a Coalition with their main rivals. Nick Clegg then bent over and accepted the fierce anal penetration of the Tory party with absolutely no resistance.
This is not a coalition, the government is 100% Tory, with the Lib Dems bolted on as a justification of their seats.
I don't understand why everyone hates the Libdems, Why don't people realise that cut have to be made because Labour wasted all the money?
They are hated because they are seen (rightly so) as a bunch of lying cunts who threw almost everything they stood for out the window and bent over for the Conservatives.
I don't understand why everyone hates the Libdems, Why don't people realise that cut have to be made because Labour wasted all the money?

Lib Dems are the most ideologically opposed major party to the Conservatives, so people who vote for them hate Tories, thus hate the coalition, thus vote for Labour instead

All of the major coalition actions so far have been Conservative policy, and the senior Lib Dems have agreed and supported all of it instead of criticising it as they would have done had they not been in government

Most people realise that cuts are necessary, but not so quickly and on such a big scale. Some also believe the Conservatives are using the cuts to hide a shrinking of the government

Now that the AV referendum seems almost certainly to have been rejected, it will become even harder for senior Lib Dems to justify the coalition, as that was their big "if we put up with this, we get this"

I don't understand why everyone hates the Libdems, Why don't people realise that cut have to be made because Labour wasted all the money?
I agree. People seem to have either forgotten already, or they are "bored of constantly hearing that excuse"
It didn't matter who got in to power in the last election, the outcome would have been mostly the same. Except if Labour got in again, in which case they would have become even more unpopular than they were. And the country probably would be even more screwed.
Holy shit
Combative stuff from Conservative MP Bill Cash. He tells Sky News people have voted with a "capital C for the Conservatives and not the coalition". He says the Lib Dems are now "so unpopular" they don't "have the right" to object to Conservative policies behind the scenes. He says they have "lost all authority and all legitimacy in insisting they have their way".
What a cunt
More results have come in, it's now +695 for Labour and -583 for Lib Dems
No surprises here. Clegg made a dumb mistake and paid for it. Unfortunately.
Surprised the conservatives weren't hit that hard... then again, the press has been attacking Clegg for all the bad government decisions and the cuts. Huh. Also, the how hard hit other parties were too, was surprising.

Lib Dems are the most ideologically opposed major party to the Conservatives, so people who vote for them hate Tories, thus hate the coalition, thus vote for Labour instead

The key word there is 'ideologically'.
A lot of people are still only just realising that politicians are all basically the same.
My friend is helping count votes for the AV referendum.
I told him to add a few thousand to the "Yes" pile.
Oh and people who voted against the Lib dems just because of the tuition fees are retarded and have blown all chance of us ever getting a decent government.
Never mind the fact that without the Lib dems arguing against the tories the fees would be like 100x higher (The conservatives would be alright, they have money enough to burn at the expense of, um, everyone else).
Vote lib dems - the only voice of reason in this constant see-saw of labour-conservative-labour-conservative-labour-conservative every few years
