Following in the path of Sony and its Vaio PCs, Samsung has decided to exit the laptop market stopping sales of Ativ Windows and Chromebook devices in Europe, PC Advisor can confirm.
It's common knowledge that the PC market is in decline with Sony pulling out and selling its Vaio business back in February of this year. Despite being a giant of the tech world, Samsung has now followed suit.
Things have been quiet from Samsung this year on the laptop side of things with no new devices at IFA 2014 in Berlin. The firm's main recent releases have included the Ativ Book 9 Plus and Ativ Book 9 Lite.
"We quickly adapt to market needs and demands. In Europe, we will be discontinuing sales of laptops including Chromebooks for now. This is specific to the region – and is not necessarily reflective of conditions in other markets," said a Samsung spokesperson.
In the case of Sony, the move resulted in significant job cuts. The firm also restructured its TV division and although a handful of staff were moved to the new company, the forecasted total loss of employees amounted to 5,000.
In Samsung's case, we haven't been given any information on any job losses but we're requesting more information so we'll update this article should we hear any further. Samsung isn't necessarily out of the business forever, though.
"We will continue to thoroughly evaluate market conditions and will make further adjustments to maintain our competitiveness in emerging PC categories," added the spokesperson.
The fuck are you talking about. People are still making PCs.
It's a pity. Amsung made amazing laptops.

Clone market isn't what it used to be. You can't get away with selling barebones machines with basic specs at high prices anymore.
PC\Laptop > Tablet.
and yet tablets are more mainstream now.

I was under the impression that the clone market essentially killed off any hopes of high margins for PC makers a long time ago. Its nothing new.

"People are still making PCs" doesn't actually disprove that claim
I got one of these Samsung Chrome books for my mom on Mother's Day last year. Only complaint was that it couldn't run iTunes.
I've only rebuilt one samsung laptop but the build quality was really bad. No metal structure within the laptop at all. The shell flexed like rubber when it was taken apart.

"photographic film is in decline"
the fuck are you talking about? people still make film!!
Profits down != PC Market Declining.
PC Market is very profitable and thriving. PC and Laptops last longer and run better. Internal parts can be replaced with new better parts.

but where film can be replaced, computers cant
that is unless we're talking microchips now
Well, the options are get a decent laptop for $20bn, or get a piece of shit that can hardly run windows for $2,000. You don't have many options in the laptop market.

Gonna have to disagree, Laptops are great when you wanna get work done. But in my experiences traveling and when you just want something to waste time with and to watch movies. Tabs are by far and wide my preferred choice. So much lighter and less of a hassle to get through security and to set up. Get a W8 tab and you even can do real things like Laptops do.

Film can be replaced about as easily as computers can. not very
I hate when they relate a 'declining' pc market to units shipped and sold per year.
Samsung isn't even apart of top 5.
not as if samsung's laptops will really be missed by many
I hate when they relate a 'declining' pc market to units shipped and sold per year.
they're somewhat correlated. hate to break it to you but laptop sales are declining surely but slowly
laptops that people are interested in, not as much. this is where companies like apple and lenovo still make a fair killing in that industry

People need to take more economics classes. Back in my high school Econ class, there was a term "Differentiated Products", products that have unique traits to them that seperate them from the crowd. For example selling vegetables sucks because anyone can do that.

The profits and amount of units sold going down is literally the definition of decline I don't know why are you people in so much fucking denial
I mean I don't have a tablet and I expect to use a PC until the day I die but it's completely ignorant to deny this is a thing
Samsung's laptops were seriously overpriced for what they were. I picked up a really nice Asus for about half the price of a similar spec'd samsung.
PC\Laptop > Tablet..
Overall I agree but tablets are great for studying. I find it way more comfortable and natural
PC\Laptop > Tablet.

For my usecase, tablets are superior to laptops. When I need power, I turn to my desktop. When I need convenience and portability, I turn to my tablet. My laptop has become an awkward middle child that kinda does both but nearly as good as the other two, so I haven't used it in months.
PC\Laptop > Tablet.

They are different kinds of devices with their own advantages and disadvantages and it turns out tablets are actually more desirable for mainstream user. It's evolution. The fact you or me dislike the trend isn't going to change that.

There in denial because they fear this will hurt PC gaming or force them into tablets or something.

This is a very pragmatic view at the situation. As long as you can afford keeping both a decent quality desktop and decent quality tablet, you pretty much cover most of what the notebook would be for.
If you can only really afford one device, notebook can kinda be something in between, but isn't really that great at either role.
The fuck are you talking about. People are still making PCs.
They are right.
Although I think what they mean is "we can't sell our shit because everyone else has better products than we do/are more integrated into the market"
lol i love how they use sony exiting the computer market as an example, totally not because their most recent line of vaio laptops were plagued with such horrid quality issues and massive recalls. literally we had a guy buy a sony vaio, he got it home, and the stupid flip feature shattered the screen. he exchanges it for a new one, which didnt work either (different problem). so after 2 brand new laptops, this guy just decides to get an HP instead
ontop of that, they try and sell a shitty pentium laptop for $700??
[editline]24th September 2014[/editline]
the vaio's are on clearance for like 75% off (you can get the i7 model for like $450) and still nobody will buy them. cant blame them

That's not to say that laptops are useless, though. I could think of tons of scenarios and professions where having a laptop would be the best bet. If you travel a lot and need that power and a full QWERTY keyboard and full Windows apps, for example, a laptop might be your best bet. It's just to say that what works for some people doesn't always work for everyone else.
I switched to laptops a few years ago and haven't looked back. They're a tad more expensive but nothing beats being able to play video games instead of pay attention in class.
I have the last model Vaio that had a quad core i7 and it kicks ass, really well built machine.
