The band is fronted by vocalist Daryl Palumbo and guitarist Justin Beck, and have undergone numerous line-up changes since their inception. The band has been influential in the progression of the underground music scene in the eastern United States and United Kingdom and on the post-hardcore genre, and are known for their intense live shows and constant line-up changes. They have been together since 1993, with a long period of sporadic between 2004-2008 due to side projects and Palumbo's struggle with Crohn's disease. They are back "at full force" currently.
Glassjaw's sound has changed over the course of their history, consisting of the genres; post-hardcore, alternative rock, alternative metal, experimental rock, progressive rock, screamo with afro-beat and jazz mixtures, and past works as rapcore, nu-metal and hardcore punk. They have cited a diverse and wide range of influences; because of this, categorization is difficult. The band's sound has, however, always been rooted in the New York hardcore (punk) scene, with Bad Brains being a cardinal influence. Elements of the late 1980s Youth Crew style of hardcore are prominent in their earlier recordings, and Youth Of Today have been cited as an important influence. Beck has cited Faith No More's attitude towards making music as an influence, while Palumbo has specifically cited Mike Patton as a huge influence on him.

To date, they have released 2 albums (Everything You Wanted to Know About Silence and Worship & Tribute) and 4 ep's (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang EP, El Mark, Our Color Green (The Singles) and Coloring Book), which have generally received praise from critics, especially Worship and Tribute, which was named in Kerrang!'s "Albums you must own" list.
