Most of the approximately 230 protesters arrested on Inauguration Day will be charged with felony rioting, federal prosecutors said. The U.S. Attorney’s Office said the offense is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The office said most of those arrested will be released without having to post bail and must return to court in February. A first group of 10 men appeared in Superior Court just before 3 p.m., and their lawyer entered a not guilty plea on their behalf. A judge released all of them on the condition they not get re-arrested in the District of Columbia. Interim D.C. police chief Peter Newsham said Friday that 217 people were being charged with rioting. The arrests took place in a four-block stretch of downtown Washington around the time of President Trump’s swearing-in ceremony. The arrests came after some protesters created chaos. Windows of downtown businesses were smashed, and police deployed pepper spray and “sting balls” against the crowd. The protesters were armed with crowbars and threw objects at people and businesses, destroying storefronts and damaging vehicles. Six police officers were hurt -- three of them hit in the head with flying objects, CBS affiliate WUSA reported. According to the station, the six had minor injuries. Also Saturday, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets in Washington for the Women’s March on Washington. Demonstrators also turned out in cities across the U.S. and the world. As people like to say: Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
As long as the peaceful protesters get off without charge, that's all good by me. But the 'protesters' who went around smashing windows, damaging cars, throwing stuff, and punching others? Yeah, good riddance to bad rubbish.
Hard to disagree with. Even with the usual political mob mentality it makes no sense given the voting preferences of DC. They just damaged property that was probably owned by someone that voted democrat.
The protesters were armed with crowbars and threw objects at people and businesses, destroying storefronts and damaging vehicles.
I mean it's not like crowbars spontaneously appeared in their hands. They clearly intended to cause damage from the start.
Yeah, the rioters definitely should be punished. But goes to show that most of the protesters are peaceful.
I agree the people that were being violent and vandalizing should face charges. But if any peaceful protesters were arrested and prosecuted that is infringing on their first amendment rights.
230 out of hundreds thousands? Not bad
The protesters were armed with crowbars and threw objects at people and businesses, destroying storefronts and damaging vehicles.
Yeah, these 230 people weren't protesting, they were rioting.

Well if anything it could be a counter argument to people going "Look at the "protesters" amarite?"
Even if all 230 were rioting, 230 out of hundreds of thousands is pretty impressive. I thought there would be much more violence.
230 out of hundreds thousands? Not bad Yeah, these 230 people weren't protesting, they were rioting.
I don't expect the Trump administration to focus on the hundreds of thousands not breaking things, unfortunately.
Even if all 230 were rioting, 230 out of hundreds of thousands is pretty impressive. There's obviously room for more or less that aren't accounted for.
Much better approach than the previous catch and release bullshit during all the BLM riots
To be fair, just because they arrested 230 doesn't mean there were at most 230 rioters. Good. The better we crack down on violence, the easier it will be for the rest of us to demonstrate peacefully.
...so the only possible two options are 230 people and 50,000 people according to you?
What I'm saying is that those who were rioting were a small minority of protesters. Maybe there were a hundred or so more rioters that didn't get arrested, but there definitely weren't thousands rioting.
I hate Trump with a fiery burning passion and share a lot of my peers' disappointment that his head wasn't rearranged long-distance-wise during his inauguration, but believe me when I say this in regards to them facing felony charges: good. The one thing I can't stand more than Trump and his cavalcade of knuckle dragging cretin supporters are the twat-waffle triggered troopers making his opposition look like a bunch of spoiled sensationalist brats. I wish there was more I could reasonably do to stop them from ruining our image short of flying out to DC and dragging their asses off the street at great personal risk. Maybe a permanent mark on their criminal record will remind them that, unlike the internet, being a cuntlick in real life will get you real life consequences no matter how offended you get about it.

There were hundreds of peaceful protests involving upwards of 3-4 million people across the country and only a dozen or so recorded arrests - most from counter-protestors. I hate this kind of violent rioting, since it simply legitimizes Trump's government's ability to crack down on peaceful protest and freedom of association, but by and large the millions that organized were unbelievably peaceful in a scale essentially unseen in US history. Largest nationwide protests in history - not at a single place, but for a single cause under a single banner. Almost no arrests. I wish it'd kill off that narrative of violence, but every time someone smashes a window it's gonna be used to delegitimize the hundreds of thousands of others.
There's some saying some of the rioters are actually paid thugs. Where does that sound familiar?
There's some saying some of the rioters are actually paid thugs. Where does that sound familiar?
This has been said by the same people for every anti-trump demo. The right wing press just love to paint Soros as the anti-christ in this regard.
This has been said by the same people for every anti-trump demo. The right wing press just love to paint Soros as the anti-christ in this regard.
I mean in regards that the Right paid off the rioters to cause chaos, rather than Hilary paid them off.
I just can't wait for the inevitable few of them that turn into actual white supremacists when they have to join a prison gang. The circle will be complete.
Well go on Mr. Prison Gang expert.
I'm not sure how you can call them to task when you clearly just believe what movies show you. Not every prison pop splits itself up purely on skin colour that's just a cheap generalization. Whilst there will largely be the expected groups, they aren't the only ones and it differs for each prison. Also siding with white power prison group for your safety =/= turning into a white supremacist.
I just can't wait for the inevitable few of them that turn into actual white supremacists when they have to join a prison gang. The circle will be complete.
I really don't understand what you're trying to get at here

Would be funny as shit if one of them does join a Aryan Brotherhood gang. But just kind of wanted to see where he would take it.
