[release]
Thieves stealing manhole covers in New York City, utility says
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Manhole covers are being stolen from the streets of New York City, leaving dangerous holes in the roads and sidewalks, authorities said on Thursday.
More than 30 manhole covers have been stolen in the city's Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx boroughs since early March, presumably by thieves selling them for scrap metal, said a spokesman for the Con Edison utility company.
"Stealing manhole covers is dangerous," said Milovan Blair, Con Edison's vice president for Brooklyn-Queens Electric Operations. "Anyone who steals these covers creates a serious hazard for pedestrians and motorists."
Witnesses have reported seeing thieves wearing utility-style clothing but without official insignia prying open covers with a car jack, loading them onto pickup trucks and driving away, Con Edison said in a statement.
Manhole covers are stolen on occasion but the recent thefts are a marked increase, said Con Edison spokesman Michael Clendenin.
The covers are made of cast iron or composite materials and can weigh as much as 300 pounds (136 kg), he said. The high price of metals make them attractive to sell as scrap.[/release]

Reminds of the time I stole one of those pole covers from a Wendy's. Except it was because I thought it would be a good conversational piece, not because it was worth a lot :v:
people will do anything to make money
bad thing is if a car hits one of them without the cover. Say good bye car because that shit is going to roll down the road.
Scrap metal pays a pretty penny. My dad actually had people cut off valves for water lines in the back of one of his strip malls.

Yeah that's not good, that can cause an accident for sure.

I don't want to imagine what it'd be like for a bikes front tire to kit that, instant death.

And that's something new for you?
Here in the post communist Czech republic they are nowadays basically changing all manhole covers and grates with plastic ones so they won't get stolen by metal collectors.
Even the manhole gets in trouble

This is nothing new. In Slovakia, we also have to replace them with plastic ones.
But....cast iron is one of the cheapest metals right now.
Steal the toilet paper from stores and sell them for cheap.
In Israel some people drive around in pick-up trucks and search out for any scrap metal they can find to sell. But at night they often sneak into places and steal scrap metal or steal entire fences.
We get a lot of drain cover thefts here (England).
Most of the time they just put a plastic cone over the top.
Doesn't seem like big news to me.
This thread did not help my manhole fear at all.

Definitely not a new concept, people have been scrappers forever, but it's still a unique thing to hear about.

Why whenever I see images like this from South America or Asia, the people are just riding by like nothing's wrong? Those people on the bikes aren't even shocked by this.

My guess is that they play enough GTA, COD, HL2, ARMA, etc. to be desensitized and not give a shit about dead people[SUB][SUB][SUB]Hey it's a joke rate funny[/SUB][/SUB][/SUB]
I'm surprised they haven't done this before now.
