AT&T Inc. (T) is in advanced talks to acquire DirecTV (DTV), the largest U.S. satellite-TV provider, for about $100 per share, according to people familiar with the matter.
Under the plan being discussed, DirecTV management will continue to run the company as a unit of AT&T and DirecTV Chief Executive Officer Mike White plans to retire after 2015, said the people, asking not to be named because the information is private.
The $100 per share price values El Segundo, California-based DirecTV at about $50 billion. That’s about 29 percent above DirecTV’s price on April 30, before the Wall Street Journal first reported the companies were in talks.
Dang it, they're like the only good satellite provider...
Time to switch to Dish.
You know, its times like this that I wonder why we even split up Bell Systems.

In the end it just reeled back into something larger and much more terrifying.
If they keep using the brand DirectTV and don't mess with it at all, we should be good. We'll see how this goes.

When we broke up Bell, antitrust laws actually meant something. Now you can just pay off the politicians to avoid them or have them changed.
a piece of shit tv company being bought out by a piece of shit phone company.
it's a match made in heaven.
Fuck off AT&T
I wonder if this also includes DirecTV in other countries as well :(
At least I'm jumping the DirecTV ship next month. Cable company is bringing copper down my road and their TV+ 30/10Mbps internet is less than our monthly Direct bill. They are even buying us out of our contract with direct which we only started two months ago
American TV sucks anyway. May as well just call it paying for commercials and skip the damn facade of entertainment.
I just use it for the background noise, so I don't feel lonely in my room
Then just use local stations and save money.
direcTV used to have Science channel in their standard package, now they have literally nothing I want. They took away most of the channels that were good and replaced them with shitty music and infomercial 24/7 channels. No more boomerang, science, natgeo, nothing good at all. Fuckem I'll just use the internet.
Direct TV is quite expansion on the bills, over here in Louisville, Kentucky, the bill cost around $100-125... my parents like to watch TV, and there is no other cheap services for TV that has HBO as they are game of thrones, True Blood and fans of other TV shows.
Meanwhile, Charlie is trying to get his hands on a telecom...

actually bell wasn't a bad monopoly they were one of the few companies that funded tons and tons of research into stuff they didn't even do any work in like the transistor or computers, photovoltaics, satelites, guidance systems, AI, tons of other stuff, and they stayed a monopoly because they donated so much research to everybody and did so much government work.
they had plans to fiber-ize the entire country by 1990... today's AT&T has plans to roll out DSL to the entire country by 2030
[editline]12th May 2014[/editline]
though the number of content providers shrinking is a bad thing
If they keep using the brand DirectTV and don't mess with it at all, we should be good. We'll see how this goes.
They won't. If the way they handle their DSL service is anything to go by DTV is going to go to shit in pretty short order.
TV's dead anyway. It's only useful if you have shit internet.
Fifty billion? AT&T is dumb don't they realise they could get all the shows they wanted off of the internet? There's no need to pay that much.
Does this mean no more of DirecTv's wonderful ads?
Damnit...they were the only guys who's marketing efforts made me laugh.
FUCK YOU AT&T YOU HEARTLESS BASTARDS! :suicide:
Dang it, they're like the only good satellite provider...
Hang on, what's wrong with Dish? They seem OK...

$130 per month, signal dies during a light rain storm, shit DVRs, laggy guide menu for browsing channels, 10,000 channels of nothing but shit.

The last one isn't DISH Network's fault. And as for the others, do you even use DISH? Because it took a friggin blizzard here to ruin my signal, and even then it just meant no HD. SD was still available.

sounds like direct tv in florida
I've never had a problem with att (except for their laggy cable boxes but all cable providers have that problem)
thats ok
netflix is better anyways
AT&T/Century Link already bundles with Direct TV, if you want Phone, Internet and TV and you have one company you already have the other.. This literally changes just about nothing.
This is Alexander Graham Bell's fault.
It still boggles my mind how you from the US see this as a competitive market. If this happened in the Netherlands then they would fine those fuckers in the millions.
