They are known for traveling the world and documenting our surroundings in extreme detail. But, as these pictures show, it seems as though Google may have photographed itself being involved in a rather unfortunate accident.
A picture has emerged on Twitter which was taken by a Google Street View car showing a donkey - which looks dead - lying beside a road in Botswana.
And the pictures seem to suggest that the donkey was knocked over by the very same Google Street view camera car which photographed the injured beast.
A puff of dust pictured billowing from the donkey indicates the animal may have just fallen as the image was taken. When Google users scroll past the injured donkey they can see it standing uninjured by the road side.
This has led to accusations that Google ran over the donkey and the picture of it lying injured by the roadside was taken by the rear-facing camera. Google has claimed its car approached the donkey, which was already lying down. The internet giant claims it then gets up again and continues walking uninjured. However, according to images seen by Couriermail.com.au, this version of events suggests that the donkey is walking backwards.
A Google Street View spokesman denied that the donkey was injured by one of its cars. 'Our Street View teams take the safety of people and donkeys very seriously,' the spokesperson said. 'A review of our imagery confirms that we did not cause any harm to the donkey.'
However, people who saw the picture on Twitter had a different view.

I read that this was in a country where they drive on the left side of the road; which would mean the donkey was rolling around in the dirt until the van drove up to it.
-snip, nvm-
It's rolling around in the dirt.
According to Wikipedia, you're correct. They drive on the left.
According to the daily mail this theory is rebutted because if this were true the donkey would have to be walking backwards.
How the fuck the donkey would have to be walking backwards makes any sense I have no idea.
You can clearly see the dirt imprints where the donkey was rolling around. And a donkey wouldn't be in a position like that if it was hit. All four legs would be limp and touching the ground, which isn't the case in the photo.
When you hit an animal like a donkey, deer, horse, cow, etc., you usually end up breaking their legs or them snapping off, with the body rolling up onto the hood and then being ejected off somewhere. This animal shows no signs of any of that trauma and is most likely fine.
I've hit a deer going 40 mph, it wasn't a pretty sight. All four legs snapped off and went flying in different directions and the main body was ejected at least 30-40 yards away.

this was obviously a very reckless google driver.

I bet your car was pretty fucked up too.
Most Google street view cars aren't employed by Google, but are instead contracted. So it's all good for Google, but not the company that actually employs the driver.

Some animals/people will do anything to get on the internet.

Perhaps he walked forward, then turned around.
I bet your car was pretty fucked up too.
It was a baby doe, so it didn't do too much damage. It fucked up the chrome on the grille, cracked the license plate holder and put a small dent on the front of the hood.
I didn't see the damn thing until the last possible second when it just appeared out in front of me. I couldn't slam on the brakes because there were cars behind me and I couldn't veer off because it was just a two lane-two way road with houses on both sides.
Just a reminder if you're driving out in the hill country in Texas to watch the sides of the road, deer all over the place. All deer accidents are usually the result of deer jumping out in front of your car at the last possible second, so if you see any, slow the fuck down.
The Betteridge's law applies here nicely, the journalist would've easily have found out if he used a bit of common sense and research.

This is some csi shit.
Sorry to burst everyones bubble, I took a look at this on Google street view, if you continue down the road you can see its just rolling around in the dirt, gets up and walks off.

I've always wanted to make one of these images.

It's pretty clear that the images are reversed. He would actually have to have been walking backwards for this sequence to make sense. If you reverse them, you can see that he gets up and walks towards the bush and tree.
You can tell the donkey was just having a dust bath from how the dirt is unsettled.
Also don't the streetview cars drive relatively slow?
It wouldn't be a first though, the Google Street View car did hit a deer a few years back.
It's cute, if you see it as rolling around I mean, not hit by a Google car
So in reverse, looks like the google street car stopped for the lying down donkey, then drive onwards once donkey gets up and a picture was taken at the rear.
wow
whoever wrote this article is an idiot.

It's okay, this was not another Top Gear Special In Botswana. If it was, that donkey really would have been hit, and cooked for dinner.

But in one picture, the donkey is much smaller. This leads me to believe that these two animals are not the same donkey, and that perhaps anti google groups have planted this dead animal on the road to discredit Google.
TL;DR: Perspective.

The sky is blue in one photo and the sky is white in the other, which leads me to believe that these are two completely different areas, meaning the donkeys are perfectly fine.
They have that in Botswana?
Well hasn't this story made an Ass of Google
[sp]im kidding[/sp]
Daily Mail, you live in a fucking LHD country and you yourself don't understand how LHD works?
goddamn.
Almost certain I've seen these pictures before. Niceto see The Daily Mail hasn't done it's homework
