Arthur Freeman has been jailed for life for murdering his four-year-old daughter Darcey by throwing her off Melbourne's West Gate Bridge, but will be eligible for parole after 32 years.
Freeman began ranting after being sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court on Monday and had to be pulled from the dock by security guards.
Justice Paul Coghlan jailed Freeman for life but decided to set a minimum term of 32 years, meaning the earliest he will be eligible for release will be January 29, 2041.
Freeman had stood motionless as he was being sentenced while his former wife Peta Barnes also showed no emotion.
Freeman later began ranting about a Barnes family member's involvement in the Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia and had to be pulled from the dock by three security staff.
Justice Coghlan said many would see Freeman's crime as so serious that he should not be eligible for parole but he had decided to set a minimum term of 32 years.
"Whatever happens you will spend what may be regarded by many as the best years of your life in prison," he told the 37-year-old.
"I do not regard you as being beyond redemption."
Justice Coghlan said an innocent child had been killed in horrible circumstances.
"The throwing of your four-year-old daughter from a bridge more than 58 metres above the ground could not be more horrible," he told Freeman.
"What Darcey's last thoughts might have been does not bear thinking about and her death must have been a painful and protracted one."
Minutes before the murder on January 29, 2009, Freeman telephoned Ms Barnes and told her to "Say goodbye to your children".
He parked his four-wheel drive in the left-hand emergency lane of the bridge, coaxed Darcey out of the car and picked her up.
Freeman then carried the child in his arms to the edge of the bridge and threw her over the edge.
Justice Coghlan said Freeman's conduct was a most fundamental breach of trust and an attack on the institution of the family.
"It can only be concluded that you used your daughter in an attempt to hurt your former wife as profoundly as possible."
During his three-week trial Freeman did not deny killing Darcey, but his barrister argued Freeman was "mad not bad" when he threw her from the bridge.
He pleaded not guilty on the grounds of mental impairment but a jury last month found him guilty of murder.
Justice Coghlan said he had taken Freeman's mental illness into account when deciding to set a non-parole period and its length.
The day before he killed Darcey, Freeman had the amount of time he had custody of his children reduced by a court.
After the hearing he drove to his parents' house in the seaside hamlet of Aireys Inlet where his three children had been staying.
The next morning Freeman's father Peter noticed his son was distressed and appeared to be in a "trance".
As Freeman drove away from the bridge after murdering Darcey, his six-year-old son Ben urged him to turn back.
"Darcey can't swim," Ben told his father.
Freeman drove to the Commonwealth Law Courts complex in the CBD and tried to hand his two-year-old son Jack to security staff.
Freeman then became distressed and started crying and shaking.
He was later arrested at the complex.
On Monday, several members of the jury that convicted Freeman were in court to hear the sentencing.
Neither Freeman's parents, nor the Barnes family, made comment as they left the court.
She'd probably just die on impact. Wouldn't be much worse.

I never felt bad about laughing at a joke at the expense of a tragedy until now.

Just blame MLP. Your sorrow will turn to hate, which will then be directed at ponies.

I'm pretty sure 32 years is enough to reflect over what a stupid thing he did.
I hope he dies in prison.

This is a man that can't be saved. He should never be released

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just kill him?
Wouldn't it be cheaper to just kill him?
Probably - but we're past the death penalty in society, aren't we?

But wouldn't it be more moral to put the money that would have otherwise been wasted in caging this man for the rest of his life into, say, cancer research, or prosthetics for children, or scholarships?

Yes, no doubt - but legally killing someone for a crime is barbaric and backwards in our progressing society. I'm sure money could be sourced from other useless programs the Government has. Perhaps the millions they pour into cars and petrol used by Parliamentarians? Or even their pensions?

then the difference is our opinions on penalty
i kinda like the eye for two eyes idea
Not so free, are you now?
Oh god what if his son Ben was murdered instead?

The amount of paperwork you need to perform capital punishment costs more than a life sentence.
Besides, it's completely barbaric.
John Freeman backfliped out of the sky and landed besides Henry Freeman. Henry Freeman looked at John Freeman in the eyes and cry falled out and said "Dad kid has dead". John Freeman went sad at the ground then moved head real fast up.
