Some of you savvy Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney fans will have noticed that the fifth main Ace Attorney installment, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, has gone live on the Japanese iOS app store. What the?! That game’s on iOS in Japan?!
Well never fear! That app is headed for western shores (North America and Europe) very soon, complete with all the thrills, spills, mood matrices, and—oOOoo—HD resolution! I can’t give an exact release date right now, but rest assured it will be quite soon, so for now let’s just enjoy this fleeting moment in time where we know something great is on the way. Take that!
It suddenly hit Japan earlier today with absolutely no announcement, and apparently it's coming westward "very soon". Weird. More English screenshots in source.
Here's a video of the Japanese version in action:

After the abysmal iOS version of the Trilogy, I remain skeptical of this one's quality. People on Court-Records.net who are playing the Japanese version have told me that it's quite good so far, though. Still no word on the promised Android version of the Trilogy or if AAI2 will ever get a localization...
Well the iOS version had issues with modernizing the game while this one was only released last year. If they manage to fuck this up then I'm just going to shake my head.

It's just not Wright how they treat Android.

Probably has to do with the fact that iOS is very popular mobile OS in Japan. Doesn't cost them much to release a translated version in English, compared to rewriting the entire game for android

Actually, the Trilogy is already out on Android in Japan. It was promised to come to the west as well, but it never happened.
Another amazing portrayal of Winston Payne
Someone on Court-Records has posted their impressions and they say it's actually very close to the 3DS version. Good to hear - looks like we're finally getting a decent iOS port for once.

What was wrong with the iOS version? I played through all three on DS and iOS and I didn't notice much difference.

-choppy performance (regardless of hardware)
-low-quality music in AA2-3 (sourced from the GBA versions AND low-bitrate)
-mismatched filenames for some songs and sounds (ex: pearl's theme switched with victory theme)
-missing animation frames because they didn't bother to draw them in HD (some characters are so poorly animated that they don't even blink)
-sprites are sometimes misaligned (ex: phoenix's face during those close-up shots can sometimes be floating away from his head)
-various script errors introduced due to poor conversion; some even caused crashes until capcom patched them (strangely never patched any of these other problems)
-some visual effects missing (ex: the pixelation effect for breaking psyche-locks, being lightheaded, etc.)
It's a shoddy, extremely low-effort port, especially at launch when it had some game-breaking bugs. And even worse was that at launch Capcom told fans that they'd be gauging AA5 and AAI2's localization chances on the shitty iOS trilogy's sales. Capcom is such a shitty company to its fans.
I have played the Japanese 3DS trilogy, which is based on the iOS version, and I can say that they've fixed most of these problems there. Still not perfect, though.

But that's Gaspen Payne.

DrasStic works amazingly on Android anyway, so there isn't really much need for a native port now.
Stupid, should remain a 3DS exclusive

But it's a 3DS title, not DS?
But it's a 3DS title, not DS?
Ah shit, didn't realise, there's so many of them nowadays.
Stupid, should remain a 3DS exclusive
Why? It an way to sell more and to enable more to play the game. It's stupid NOT to.
Stupid, should remain a 3DS exclusive
I dunno, I kinda feel mixed about it. On the one hand, it does hurt 3DS' exclusive lineup, but on the other it's making these games a lot more accessible. It used to be hard to convince friends to play these games because they didn't have the corresponding handheld, but now it's right on their phones with free demo chapters.
Which reminds me, does anyone else remember the dumbphone port of the first game? :v:
