One way to avoid exploitation is not to go purely for a "looking through a glass mirror" effect. Actually being in the thick of it, sharing values and experiences with the people they're filming. You can take it even further, by sharing profits with them for their time but that's a rabbit hole that might be a bit much, alternatively donate a percentage to a charity. If you move away from the encounter with both people benefiting from it instead of one, then it's not exploitative. This way is a lot harder to do of course. The video of them using the drone is a nice example though, because the kids got firsthand experience of seeing some absolutely incredible technology they might not otherwise see. Sharing cultures and experiences enhances both sides, rather than just taking from one.
This video brought up a lot of things I never thought about, especially when he mentioned things like Vice and documentaries.
