Vice-President Joe Biden on Tuesday stoked speculation that he would run for president in 2016, after being foiled twice before.
Mr Biden was asked if it was the last time he would be "voting for himself" as he cast his ballot in his home state of Delaware. "No, I don't think so," he said with a grin.
Along with Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, Mr Biden would be one of the biggest names in a Democratic primary contest in 2016 to succeed either Barack Obama or Mitt Romney.
But his chances of the top job would be much improved if he and Mr Obama wake up this morning with a second term in office ahead of them.
A long-serving former US senator, Mr Biden ran for the Democratic nomination in 1988 as a main contender but was forced to drop out after it was revealed that he had plagiarised Neil Kinnock speeches.
In 2008 he was overshadowed and out-raised by Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama and quit early on.
Apart from that record of failure, his age might also count against him. If successful in 2016, he would be the oldest first-term president at 73.
Mr Biden has changed his tune over the past week about whether he would seek the presidency in 2016. During a stop in Sarasota, Florida last Wednesday, Mr Biden told a voter, "You can vote for me in 2016" after his health insurance premiums have decreased in cost.
Well liked around Washington, Mr Biden has now handled himself well in two vice-presidential debates and could boast of ample experience of power.
But he retains his reputation for gaffes. During this campaign he said that the "middle class has been buried the last four years", a mistake mercilessly seized on by Republicans.
Stick it to them, Mean Joe.

John C. Calhoun was vice president under John Quincy Adams, then Andrew Jackson.
Biden is too old to be President. What if he dies on the job.

Then his Vice President would take over. Like Lyndon B. Johnson did.
