Business. It's about being busy :v: But apart from managing endless accounts, reviewing court cases, and making sure the filthy rich stay rich, what do officeworkers REALLY DO? And the stock market, wall street, investment, shares, all that stuff. What is the point of it all? What happened to "money"? It is now an unsolvable enigma where your dollar is worth half as much today as it was yesterday. Why can't a dollar be a dollar, and settle at that? As for officeworkers, they just sit there getting fat in front of a screen. Is there something they are doing that a mainframe cannot? It really confuses me  What's your view on 'business'?
Business is a way to make a living, to be able to buy the things you like so you can enjoy your life and live it as well as you see fit. Which is all we can ever really do.
It gives jobs
Like many things it pretty much keeps the world going.

Nowadays, Wall Street is the world's biggest casino in my opinion. 'Money' is backed up by gold and silver(?) and the amount of it that is in circulation around the world and how often it is used are usually what decides the value of money, your idea is stupid. Your 'Officeworkers' is a very vague term. Without the said 'business' as you mentioned, you wouldn't be in a house or be on your parent's computer.
Businesses provide jobs, services, opportunities, money, etc. to people.
If you've ever worked in an office setting, it doesn't take long to realise how many stuffed shirts are on the payroll. Mismanagement is a problem that plagues a massive number of corporate entities. 'Filling a position' isn't a rational or efficient reason to employ someone.

If he kept going, I imagine he would have started ranting about how it's all a conspiracy to keep us in our place financially. You're overgeneralizing everything and missing the point. Different businesses do different things but it all boils down to trying to make the most money by providing a good or service. All those "officeworkers" handle the minutia of the whole thing, and they're not all reviewing "court cases"...although a good deal of them do have to manage accounts, as you want to make sure you're making the most money doing what you do. The stock market, as someone else pointed out, is a forum where people will give their money to a company in order to let that company hire workers, buy equipment, and provide a good/service that will hopefully be profitable. Once that company starts making money, they can afford to start providing interest on that first person's investment...i.e. giving them back more than what they put in. It's obviously a lot more complicated than that, I'm just trying to lay out the basics. A dollar is still a dollar, but when people throw more dollars in to a certain industry, everyone can get their hands on them relatively easy, and that's what makes their worth go down. Well that and the government will also be "investing" more money in to its own economy by printing more money. The more of something there is, the less value it has. TLDR: When you buy something, the means for making it and putting it on the shelf have to come from somewhere, that's what Wall Street does.
The scary thing is, it isn't dependent on Gold or Silver anymore. The gold standard was eliminated back in the 1970s, and since then the money in our pockets has value because the government says it does. We have what is called a fiat currency, which has it's own advantages and disadvantages.
Obama will fix it
You don't really get how the world works do you? I hope you learn before you move out of your parents' house. For your own sake.
Business made the computer that you're using to post on here. Business made the gaming world as we all know it. Business fucking made Facepunch. When you break down the work force, you'd be surprised how many people can carry the weight of the bigger companies.

Money = Useless? Me = Silly? :downs:
This thread = pointless?
Wow OP is retarded and doesn't understand basic economics.
It makes the world we live in, work, literally, and figuratively.
The gold standard was flawed, I think it's better this way
It had a lot of disadvantages but fiat money has a lot of problems too. The biggest problem with a gold standard was deflation. The need for money kept expanding while the supply of money remained fairly fixed, and thus the value of money increased every month. It was actually more profitable to save up your money and just stuff it under your mattress than invest it or keep it in a bank, as its value would just keep going up. Prices kept falling and falling, which was great for consumers but terrible for producers. Food prices were so low that it wasn't profitable to be a farmer anymore. The government had to literally pay farmers money to destroy their own crops to artificially lower the food supply and drive up prices. The economy just generally stagnated. With fiat currency, we have almost the opposite problem. The money supply isn't tied to anything other than government printing presses, and thus the money supply keeps expanding and expanding and thus the value of each dollar decreases, and now simply by saving up your money you end up losing money. Additionally, prices keep rising and rising as more and more money enters circulation. So people start spending their money as soon as they get it rather than saving it up, and we end up with a lot of people living paycheck to paycheck. So now we have a lot of economic growth but a lot of people are ending up in debt and even defaulting on their loans as prices keep rising.
op is 12

When mainframes are sentient, then maybe you can think about replacing office workers.
