• Universe is older than we though; a corollary to the new CMBR measurement.

[QUOTE]The map results suggest the universe is expanding more slowly than scientists thought, and is 13.8 billion years old, 100 million years older than previous estimates. The data also show there is less dark energy and more matter, both normal and dark matter, in the universe than previously known. ====================================== New Changes: Age of the Universe: 13.8 Byo Hubble constant: 67.15 ± 1.2 kilometers/second/megaparsec. Dark Matter: 26.8% Dark Energy: 68.3% Normal Matter: 4.9% ====================================== Source: [URL]http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2013-109[/URL][/QUOTE] [sub][sub]Title is meant to read:[/sub][/sub] [sub][sub]Universe is older than we thought: a corollary to the new CMBR measurement.[/sub][/sub] [sub][sub]I tried to fix it, but Facepunch was being a turd and not loading, so the time limit for corrections expired.[/sub][/sub]
It's times like this that I get amazed that some moving bio-sacks on a little blue speck in the midst of vast nothingness can figure shit like this out.
Huh; so an extra 100mil on the ol' odometer then. Sounds legit, though folks'll need to keep that in mind when they're speaking about the science. But it makes us wonder; if the universe is 13.8bil instead of 13.7bil, how old could the oldest galaxy potentially be?
How does one measure antimatter and dark energy?
[QUOTE=Phaselancer;39994394]How does one measure antimatter and dark energy?[/QUOTE] by measuring the matter and light energy duh
the universe is like one of those middle aged women who puts on the anti-wrinkling cream to look(up to) 100 million years younger.

[QUOTE=Phaselancer;39994394]How does one measure antimatter and dark energy?[/QUOTE] dark matter is indirectly observed by looking at the movements of normal matter for example, looking at the angular velocity of objects in a spiral galaxy vs how far away they are from the center of said galaxy, what is observed differs from what would be expected if the galaxy just contained normal matter, and adding dark matter can account for this difference [editline]21st March 2013[/editline] dark matter can also be observed using gravitational lensing (when light bends around objects of large mass)
I guess we misunderstood the bible once more [editline]March 21st[/editline] You /r/atheism guys really need to settle down with your angst, this comment wasn't pro-religion at all. It was mocking religious peoples' usual excuse of "it was a metaphor" or "we misread it" whenever something scientific directly disproves something in the bible.

68% dark energy. That's really scary for some reason
[QUOTE=J!NX;39995325] Leave[/QUOTE] Why?
[QUOTE=Bazsil;39995756]Why?[/QUOTE] For one, there are many different holy books for many different religions, so believing you're right in the sea of people who believe they're right because you believe in a book is not a respectable act. Also, this is science, we observe and come to our conclusion based on understanding and it's pretty demeaning to put down our efforts like this in the way you did.

And nice use of "we" and "our", I'm sure you contributed SO MUCH to the discovery of this.

The universe is disappointed.

I haven't seen any legitimately religious people on here yet because it usually ends up like this.

They rated you dumb because your post was dumb and unnecessary. For one, you starting up an argument nobody wants to have.

No, i'm fairly certain that before it was "Look this dude's religious, fuck him right!" and now its "Look we knew all along you're just being intolerant!" Also andololol really don't try to act like you didn't fall for it in the first place.
[QUOTE=Spot of Tea;39995745]68% dark energy. That's really scary for some reason[/QUOTE] it just means we have no idea why the universe is expanding as fast as it is. "dark energy" is basically just a placeholder for a the cause of a phenomenon we don't currently know how to explain.
