Quentin Tarantino has been promising a release of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair for years now, and now he says he’s almost ready to deliver. During an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, Tarantino revealed that he and The Weinstein Company have had discussions about releasing the film in theaters “within the next year.” Hit the jump to read his comments.
Kill Bill originally debuted at Cannes in 2003 as a single film, but the nearly four-hour running time caused The Weinstein Co. to split it in two for the theatrical release. Kill Bill: Volume 1 opened in 2003 followed by Kill Bill: Volume 2 in 2004. Fans have been clamoring for a combined cut pretty much ever since, and Tarantino has insisted time and time again that they would get one eventually.
At his Dynamite Entertainment panel, Tarantino was asked yet again for a status update on Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. Here’s what he said: [Click here to read more]
About time, they're great movies but the way the story is told is a mess. I've always thought recutting Kill Bill into a linear timeline would make an interesting film-school project.

Nonlinear storytelling is pretty standard in Tarantino...
I can't see him going to linear story telling for The Whole Bloody Affair.
Kill bill was one of the first tarantino films I saw, and they were damn good
I thought Vol. 2 was leagues better than the first one

I didn't say he would, I said it seems like an interesting project.

The entire point of it is the in medias res narrative. It's like if you recut Pulp Fiction to be linear, it just wouldn't have the same effect.

Someone once did that with Memento

that's ridiculous, Tarantino is masterful with pacing and Kill Bills 1 and 2 go very well.
The thing about merging these two together, in my mind is more defeating of the series tbh. I always identify with Vol 1 as being the action and head-hunting one then two being more heartfelt and meaningful.
So how much new footage will there be?
The anime introduction of O-Ren is a little bit longer, the fight scene in the tea house is now in colour and some minor scenes are cut to create a new flow for the movie

Ugh, no!

How the fuck is it a mess
It goes straight forward and there's a flashback every now and then, and it's abundantly clear when a flashback is one.

It was in color in the Japanese version. Switching the scene to black and white may have been artsy as far as minor censorship goes, but I'd still prefer that scene in color.
Ugh, no!
Supposedly it was only done in black and white because the MPAA wanted the scene toned down, so color is closer to what Tarantino originally envisioned anyway.
Tbh this is a brilliant idea. Tarantino gets to show people a movie closer to his original vision and those who don't like it get to keep watching Vol.1 and Vol.2

That's actually a special feature on the official DVD.
Together Kill Bill Vol 1&2 are my favorite Tarantino films

Not only is it just in color, it's also longer and has scenes that weren't in the international versions. Remember the guy at the end of the fighting scene? She beats his ass for siding with the Yakuza. The beating is his second encounter with her. In the japanese version the guy appears long before that in a similar comical way and gets thrown into the water.
Also remember the eye being poked out that turns the whole scene into b/w? Well in the japanese version she goes further and feeds it to another guy.

I own the japanese version of Kill Bill.

It has english and japanese subtitles and is undubbed.
I don't think I'd like a combined version. Both movies have very clear - but different influences - with Japanese movies for the first movie and Chinese for the second. They're different enough to stand on their own and mixing them together seems... odd.

they were originally a single film to begin with. I'm pretty sure there's extra footage to gradually blend the two together, that wasn't included because they were seperated for the theatrical releases.
i really doubt there will be any pacing issues or whatever in the combined cut.
