I'm on my iPhone so I have to keep it short. I took my 'hothands-2' handwarmers out at about 8:15 Friday morning for horseback riding lessons and they took a long time to heat up(maybe an hour) and didn't produce a ton of heat when they did. They kept me warm for the 1.5 hour lesson, I then took them out of my leather gloves and set them on my table at home. Today around 2 I went to take them and throw them away, to my amazement they were still hot, enough so I could have used them to keep my hands warm for another 1.5 hour lesson. I don't know how this is possible, they were open to air completely for at least 24 hours. To people who don't know; they don't commonly last past 6 hours.
Anyone care to elaborate?
Tl;dr, magic handwarmers.
It's some of those black magic hand warmers.

I did get suspicious when that scary homeless person said she would cast a curse upon me if I didn't give her a quarter.
I assume they work by having two chemicals mix and produce heat. Since you said they started out slow, they probably didn't completely mix at first.

That is the best idea next to seeing how long they go(they're still hot) and then burning them as fireworks, they make a nice spark show.
How much did they cost?

It is actually a substance oxidizing. It basically rusts and produces warmth from it.

That's still a long time for the reaction to last isn't it? I put an infrared thermo on it and the temp is about 120F.
