Secret Service requested to the Queensland Government that a roundabout in Brisbane be removed becau
US officials requested that a roundabout outside the University of Queensland be demolished so President Barack Obama's G20 motorcade would not need to slow down, according to reports.
The Australian reported on Thursday that the Secret Service request was turned down by Queensland authorities.
A spokeswoman for Transport Minister Scott Emerson said she was not aware of any request being made to Transport and Main Roads.
The Queensland Police Service and Office of Prime Minister and Cabinet declined to comment, while a spokesman for Queensland Police Minister Jack Dempsey said all security requests were a matter for G20 authorities.
Mr Obama is due to deliver a speech on Asia-Pacific leadership to a select audience at the St Lucia campus, part of which will be made into a G20 "declared area".
The president, who is expected to arrive after 10.45am, could make his way to UQ in a motorcade featuring the presidential state car, known as "The Beast".
The Beast is a Cadillac that can withstand biochemical attacks, bullets, and has an armoured plate to protect the President from roadside bombs.
It also has tear gas cannons, storage for a loaded shotgun and supplies of the President's blood type in case of an emergency.
It is also possible the President could be taken to the university by helicopter. On Wednesday, three US marine choppers were seen practising take-offs and landings outside the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital at Herston, just north of the Brisbane CBD.
The president's official plane Air Force One will touch down in Queensland at RAAF Base Amberley on Saturday morning after a flight from Beijing.
Gotta go fast.
I hope they spider proofed The Beast. You can never know when they will decide to swarm your car.
Why is the president protected this much anyway. He's just a fucking guy.
Just fucking demine the round-about and post guys there if it's such an issue, fuck.
I can certainly understand them, if something does happen, any armored vehicle is merely there to give you the extra second or two to get away, not just sit there and play by traffic rules.
I live really close to Amberley air base, maybe I should drive and have a geezer at the president touching down
Or I might be escorted to the Brisbane watchhouse
I might just stay inside

I hate when I go through a roundabout and a mine blows up, ffs

He's not just a "guy", he's the President of the United States.
Obama is scared of spiders? I wouldn't see any reason to slow down unless the secret service thinks he's going to get attacked by Bogans.
If I were President and I had a fuckin' sick ride like that I would be pissed that I couldn't drive it around personally and launch tear gas everywhere.

Yeah never understood the massive focus the US place on their president. I didn't even mean that sarcastically.

Is there a pic of this president-obstructing roundabout? Can probably just drive over it anyway.
basically it's because the president is both head of state, and head of government.
also the roundabout is a valid security concern, as standard procedure for shit hitting the fan is go fast
Sorry we've kind of got a little history of our presidents being assassinated or almost being assassinated.
Helps to be a bit careful you know?
I live 300m from that roundabout...it's not easily removable, and would create a traffic nightmare.

oh god with austrailia being so hostile to human life i bet the secret service is on their toes

maybe because there are tons of nutjobs trying to kill them all the time?
asking a town to redo roads just for him is a bit unnecessary though, especially out of our own country
Build a bridge and get over it.
No but seriously.
Just build another road nearby?

I'm sure if another head of government requested a major road change your government would be more than happy to follow it as well
:)
The secret service say it's because they can't slow down... The president just doesn't want to admit he can't navigate a roundabout.

You do know they do infact exist in America.

99% sure the president isn't going to be driving

I love roundabouts. They're not hard and faster than a light at a silly place.
I don't know how anyone is going to be a threat to the visiting politicians, theres 10 police on every street corner, swarms of cops on bikes riding around and at least 3 police vehicles in motorcades for cars with extremely tinted windows.

Because he's the leader of one of the most important countries in the world?

Not only does he have political rivals who might want to kill him, but any random nutjob who wants to go down in history as killing one of the most important people alive (at this moment) might want to join in the hunt too

Big difference "between being a bit careful" and being paranoid. A roundabout does not in any way represent a security threat for your president, especially given that the entire area is already extremely secure.

If you can't trust your president with driving a car how can you trust your president with driving a whole country????

We don't. That's why the President has handlers. And the Secret Service. And his cabinet. And Congress.
The President doesn't really do much outside of executive orders and signing bills so they don't have to get passed twice.

There are presidents and people of power from other countries who roam freely with minimal security and drive themselves around in civilian cars.
He does have a point.

Our President is more important than those people.

There's a big difference between the President of let's say Kazakhstan and the President of the United States, which is one of the most powerful and influential countries in the world (you can take that statement how you want, but that is the objective truth about the USA). Also consider the geopolitical climate of the last decade there's going to be more people out looking for his head.
