The balloon actually traveled to the Stratosphere, which is the outermost atmosphere. But that's close enough.

the thermosphere is the outermost part of the atmosphere, technically the exosphere because the thermosphere is split into two parts; the ionosphere and the exosphere

satellites orbit in the exosphere and the aurora borealis happens in the ionosphere

jets fly in the stratosphere
