Beta Late Than Never
Things have been going well. We will be having an internal beta starting next week, and a private external beta for 1,000 users sometime in October.
The private external beta will include:
-Steam
-One Valve game
-Support for Ubuntu 12.04 and above
It will not yet include:
Big Picture mode
Additional Valve games
For existing Linux users, the external private beta is a good release for seeing where we are in running our games on Linux. We will be using a sign up page for the external beta. Information about the sign up will be announced in a future post.
For those new to Linux, we recommend waiting for a subsequent release where more features are implemented along with improvements to the user install experience.

The one valve game is most likely going to be left 4 dead 2 seeing as those screenshots from earlier showed them porting it over

Nope, it's Portal

So I wonder what is Valve's plan to encourage developers to make games for Linux
Judging by Gabe's comment about wanting to make it as easy as possible to run all 2500+ Steam games on Linux, it looks like Valve might be contributing to Wine.
Either way Linux has to become a viable atlernative to Windows for gaming, Windows is just so behind and outdated, Windows 8 is just barely adding some features thant other OS's like freeBSD, Mac OSX, and Linux has had for ages now.
i doubt there will be as many linux games as there are os x games on steam, which is to say not that many.
i think it will basically be valve's games + a bunch of the indy games from humble indie bundles, and maybe a few others like killing floor. There's no way something like Assassin's creed 3 or gta 5 will be on linux.
Why is that number at the end of the link?
Why is that number at the end of the link?
That's what I was thinking, it's odd that there is a 3 at the end. None of the other posts have a number at the end.
Why is that number at the end of the link?
You know why.

Another ARG! Episode 3 will involve the Antartic confirmed.

its the 3rd post on the linux blog. don't know whey they'd start numbering at 3 tho sorry
its the 3rd post on the linux blog. don't know whey they'd start numbering at 3 tho sorry
well they can count 3
just not count to it
its the 3rd post on the linux blog. don't know whey they'd start numbering at 3 tho sorry
It's a test of the workaround, which tries to take advantage of the superposition of the number '3'. Complex quantum mechanics stuff. Basically, Valve can't count to three, but if they start at three it is both a three and a one at the same time. Now that this theory has been proven successful in the field, they can implement it and begin work on Episode 3 and/or Half-Life 3.

But on a more serious note, I can't wait for Steam on Linux. Aside from the odd program here or there, I don't even think I'll touch the Windows partition on this laptop again once that come out.

but Valve wants to get developers to move to Linux over Windows, Valve never wanted developers to start using OSX as the main platform
Episode 3 will be Linux-ready from the getgo, obviously.
Episode 3 will be Linux-ready from the getgo, obviously.
That's not actually a massive stretch. It's still work-in-progress, they want to have native support for Linux, and Valve doesn't release games until they're done.
Can't wait to get this set up on my linux box!
I will use this. I will use this!
This is good news.
Episode 3 will be Linux-ready from the getgo, obviously.
Episode 3 will be Linux-only, released in Orange Box 2 along with TF3, L4D3, Ricochet 2 and Portal 2: Episode 1 sometime in the late 2028. This is to promote Linux and to hit the final nail in Stallmans coffin.
uh, cool i guess
"Support for Ubuntu", yeah...valve... All the active Linux users who are interested have half a mind not to use Ubuntu anyways.
Like it can't be ported.
Besides the idea is more to "lure" people to use something else than Windows and OSX.
Not to mention the support Canonical offers.
Ubuntu doesn't need further encouragement, at least distro's like Mint & Debian will obviously be fully compatible.
Well, Mint anyway. Ubuntu and Debian's repositories have strayed from eachother quite a bit as of late.
-sigh- Ubuntu 12? Cam aaahhhnn... I don't want to [del]upgrade[/del] downgrade to 12...

I understand that but they should have made it independent of package managers.

Install the newer packages if Steam doesn't work with the older ones and then just install the package, this isn't bloody Windows, you can do whatever you want.
I understand that but they should have made it independent of package managers.
Do you know anything about Linux Distributions? The fact it's released as a .deb means nothing.
Do you know anything about Linux Distributions? The fact it's released as a .deb means nothing.
Exactly, which is why they should have made it package manager independent or release packages for all major distros.
Do you know anything about what I'm trying to say?

I've disabled updates because they keep breaking things and I'm tired of swmming through prompts every two days to fix new errors from the latest kernel build. as long as it doesn't break anything then I'm fine.

They're trying to make it somewhat easy to install and test the ease of install. Giving people a tarball is going to make a bunch of users go "uhwtf"
