Couldnt find a previous thread on this so I thought I would ask you guys if anyone here did it as a form of Fitness or just for the crack. I found my way onto a mountaineering course last week and I can honestly say it was one of the hardest things I've done, but definitely the most fulfilling when you get to the summit of a crag or peak. If you havent given it a try, I recommend it. Walking for a few hours, looking at the amazing views from the top of a crag down a valley with a few friends is such a chilled day and its fun and should keep your fitness relatively good too! Wild camping between walking days just adds to the fun too So, does anyone do any hill walking or mountaineering here?
I tried it almost by accident this summer, in Germany. The mountain was only 1700 m high, but me and my brother had expected to walk all the way to the top. Turns out we made a wrong turn somewhere on the way up (all the signs were in German, go figure), because all of a sudden we had to climb using large steel wires mounted into the cliff-side, for a good 800 meters or so. We almost turned around (safety equipment was highly recommended) but decided to climb it. Felt fucking great when we reached the top.
Me and my friend go to Lapland climbing/walking couple times at winter. It's good exercise and fun as long as we don't get snow inside the slots of our clothing or run out of snack and coffee. It does feel good to reach the top and since it's winter we can get back fast with sleds.
