Definitely looks like a scam.
I would buy this game, but the hundred dollar ships part is a massive blockade for me.

I got a ship for 20 bucks that also gives me the full game, and allows me to work up from the bottom of the ladder. If you want to spend 100 bucks on a ship that will take a week to unlock upon release you can, but you don't need to.

You can get in the game for like $30.
I got the game for free with an AMD promotion when I bought my GTX 970 (yes, you read that right).
It has a lot of potential, but at least I'm not out real money if it turns out to be garbage.

I bought it for around 30 dollars. I havent been following this game though... Is it going to be centered around dogfighting stuff, or will it have MMO and sandbox elements like EVE?
I eagerly look forward to more ships that are outright better than my Aurora in every way.
Frankly Arena Commander lost its charm after about 10 minutes.

It's going to be very much an MMO environment, but one that combines both ship-scale flight/combat with fps-level walking/fighting. And there's the single-player campaign, Squadron 42. Other single-player storyline-driven campaigns are intended for the future, too, with different focuses.

The next major patch to AC (1.1) should introduce an in-game currency system for AC that lets you buy weapons and rent ships to test-fly without spending real money. And, once the game's actually out, of course, you'll be able to earn ships in-game... but that's a bit of a ways out.

That sounds a lot more like what AC was originally supposed to be, a testing environment for the basic ship combat. Not what we have right now, which is a separate money generating scheme where you can pay $160 to farm people in your Hornet.
To be fair, they'd want to sort out flight model, destruction model, network issues etc. (Which tbh they've sorted out quite well imo.) Before doing any kind of ship/weapon balance testing.

I don't think it's really intended to be a money-generating scheme; on a recent Reverse the Verse (community team takes questions from backers in Twitch chat), Ben Lesnick explicitly said, "Don't buy weapons from Voyager Direct," because the in-game currency is coming. As it stands right now, it is P2W if you're intent on playing multiplayer dogfighting, but I don't think it's either intended nor a particularly big source of revenue for them.
And those people who get into the full game with $90 real dollars worth of guns/missiles that're earnable in like an hour are the suckers in the end. The only things I've bought from VDirect are cosmetic things like the buggy (because it's the buggy, c'mon).
