Newington, NH (January 19, 2017) – SIG SAUER, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Army has selected the SIG SAUER Model P320 to replace the M9 service pistol currently in use since the mid-1980’s. Released in 2014, the P320 is a polymer striker-fired pistol that has proven itself in both the United States and worldwide markets. The P320 is the first modular pistol with interchangeable grip modules that can also be adjusted in frame size and caliber by the operator. All pistols will be produced at the SIG SAUER facilities in New Hampshire.
The MHS Program provides for the delivery of both full size and compact P320’s, over a period of ten (10) years. All pistols will be configurable to receive silencers and will also include both standard and extended capacity magazines.

Sig submitted the P320 to this competition which looks like this:

It took them several years and millions of dollars, but the Army finally managed to select a new pistol! I'm actually suprised that they didn't just go with a Glock like most of the Special Operations Forces have
Some choice quotes leading up to this:
“The Army’s effort to buy a new handgun has already taken 10 years and produced nothing but a 350-page document micromanaging extremely unimportant details and byzantine rules the Army wants followed, many of which are totally unnecessary and anticompetitive” - Sen. John McCain
"with an estimated completion date of Jan. 19, 2027"
wait, does this mean delivery will finish in 2027, or that they will select another gun in 2027?
seems like an awfully slow deployment, which is disappointing after an awfully slow selection
props on the CarniK Con vid though
how the hell did it take 10 years and $17 million to figure out a new standard pistol
at least it looks a lot cooler than the m9
i can believe a testing competition could cost maybe 1 million when alls said and done but god this is rediculous
That's an ugly handgun.

Guns are a thing that you very rarely innovate hugely in. There's a reason a lot of special forces guys still use the 1911A1. Since about the mid 20th century, firearms technology has basically tapered off. It's everything else that's being innovated on.
[editline]20th January 2017[/editline]
Innovating on the 1911 or M9 or the Glock is like reinventing the wheel, basically. They both have their flaws, but as a whole, to make a gun that's entirely better than them and still reputable takes some time and doing, and beforehand nobody's really had the gim to do it because.. why fix what's broken?

The hell you say? The P320 looks like an unlicensed airsoft gun compared to the M9
I'm not surprised, it's the only option that offered full modularity.
honestly, it does look like a toy.
farewell M9, ye served well

It's not THAT bad, it's mostly the polymer desert tone that makes it look like shit.

I think it means that they will continue making those handguns and delivering them to the Army until that date, at which point the contract can be renewed if necessary.
Funnily enough, that's when the Marines are planning to get in on it since they're planning on sticking with the M9/M9A1 until the mid 2020s at the earliest
SIG Sauer best handguns
Good replacement for that hideous m9
I thought trials for weapons lasted less than a month, why did it take 10 years?

Fucking government bureaucracy. Around a year ago SIG was still working on securing this contract with the army, but it seemingly got cancelled. Bunch of people got laid off and NOW the army decides to actually go through with it.
Holy shit this is huge. It also means I won't be getting any P320's any time soon.

With how wasteful US military seems to be, I'm surprised we are not talking about hundreds of millions here.

MARSOC were the last ones holding onto the 1911, but even they dropped it recently in favor of the Glock. Kind of a sad saga considering how they purchased brand new modernized ones from Colt in 2012 and completely dropped them just 4 years later.
Initial adoption and excitement in 2012:

Problems with the frame cracking in endurance tests:

The Marine Corps authorizes them to carry Glocks over their 1911s in 2015:

They decide to drop the 1911 completely and only the Glock is authorized as a secondary weapon in 2016:

they only got them for the rule of cool .45 myth so it's good they realized their mistake early

I believe that's the time by which they're meant to have fully replaced the M9. Handguns are pretty much the lowest priority when it comes to military small-arms so it's not an unreasonable length of time. What is unreasonable is the amount of time and money it took them to arrive at the decision
Forgive the pun, but selecting a new pistol now might be jumping the gun. Is the P320, or the guns it was competing with really that much better than the M9, or is it simply a case of the existing ones in inventory being worn and whatnot? In either case, perfection of this technology seems to be the actual next step in the evolution of handguns:

Kind of. MEUSOC and in relation MARSOC used 1911's through the M9 adoption.

yeah they're 26 years old
they're older than the guys using them

Something tells me that the US Army doesn't give a rat's ass about how cool it looks, only how good it kills.
Always been a fan of Sig's sidearms; glad they got the contract.
it looks like a gun
Kind of. MEUSOC and in relation MARSOC used 1911's through the M9 adoption.
yeah but they had to maintain their reputation as tough guys who don't take any shit, and that entailed using a heavier pistol that's more prone to breaking down with half the rounds and shittier follow up and barely, if any, performance increase depending on the type of round
plus they're soc so firing gold bars at the enemy is ok
I wish the NH factory luck in making all those pistols; They're having trouble finding enough workers as it is.
Something tells me that the US Army doesn't give a rat's ass about how cool it looks, only how good it kills.
It doesnt kill any better than a Glock, Beretta, or Colt.
It doesnt kill any better than a Glock, Beretta, or Colt.
well it fires the .357 SIG instead of the .40 S&W like its competitors did so it probably does kill stuff deader
[editline]19th January 2017[/editline]
also beretta's entry was ugly as FUCK
