• Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

I completely forgot how good IM1 looked before watching this.
Haaaha what the fuck, hard to believe but god damn his edits are much better!
Guess I'm weird in that I don't find these ugly at all? Probably could be better and I'm no expert but the colour gradients these used were fine and wouldn't even call them close to 'ugly'.
Every movie looks like shit these days They look too glossy and washed out, and some of them are so dark that you can barely see jack shit half the time
God Pacific Rim really is a stunning looking film, cant wait for the second.
I'm surprised there are no fan edits out there trying to make things more interesting with the coloring since it's all post-process.

Also they better have solved this problem come Black Panther. If I don't get at least one shot where he's standing in complete shadow with only his eyes shining before he walks out of the darkness I will be dissapointed

their cutting has also gotten really weird
Thank god someone else noticed this. Visuals are the most important part of a movie and its a real shame Marvel butcher their films in post.
I didn't realize the differences until he had the shots of Iron Man 1/2 near Civil War, his suit is the most faded red/gold I've seen. That's insane.
I'm happy I wasn't the only who noticed this. The movies look so fucking boring. I need shit like Mad Max with deep oranges and blues.
Except almost every film that comes out now has an orange/blue color grade to it, so Marvel's muddy overcast coloring is a welcome break IMO.
I dont even get the "but it looks REEEAL" thing. Real life has vibrant colors and deep contrast, only time it doesnt is during deep overcast or a dust storm.

Hell, during a bright day shit often looks desaturated here.
I'd honestly rather have that instead. And it wasn't just concerning Mad Max's color grade. IT was concerning how vibrant the colors were
Indeed. Even a simple saturation boost, in my opinion, can have a huge impact on making footage look better. And that's not even considering playing with levels to get the true black, as Willems points out here.
Holy shit, I've always been a bit on the fence about Marvel visuals and I could never really pin down what felt so off about every single on of their movies. It's the lack of proper color grading. Shit, some of those Captain America clips don't even look graded at all. This makes so much sense.
His first edit was really good but the ones which followed just looked like he turned up the yellow and left everything else. I get wanting the films to be more vibrant, super hero comics are all about being vibrant, but I don't think vibrant = yellow. Also I think it's funny that he criticised Marvel for using the same colour grading for all their films when I thought he had done the same thing for all his edits.

After actually learning about colour grading a few years back I've become quite aware of it in films, and it's actually really interesting to see how various colourists use it. I could never quite put my finger on why all the MCU films look incredibly similar, but I knew something was clearly up when watching them. And yeah, it's the colour grading for sure. They are still all pretty good lookers, technically solid and occasionally impressive. But everything is so flat.

I wanted to see the full picture on its own, because I think the contrast between the two makes it look more jarring than it really is
When I watched Civil War in theaters I got motion sick. I'm pretty sure that the film was sub-24 fps. It felt like I was watching an action scene on a computer without the minimum specs. Did anyone else get that? Like, it feels much choppier than any other movie I've seen.

I feel like there's an argument to be made for the flatter tones in Marvel films based around the fact that their content is generally quite fantastical and so might need a bit of grounding. He pointed out that DC is less flat like that, and given that DC generally seem to be going for gritty and realistic (to very mixed success) they may be doing the same: by compensating and making the colours more vibrant.

Isn't he just talking about "crushing the blacks"?
It is very important for the color grading to look natural, the edits that he presented looked rather strange I think, but that is mostly because they were just quick examples. I'm sure that significant improvements could be possible with careful micromanagement.
Not that i like marvel's typical grey pallet, but overall i think it's not a coincidence. They have been trying to make their films look more and more mature lately, and choosing desaturated colors is probably one of the ways they're using to achieve that. As for the guy, I think he just seemingly does not understand that the real beauty of vibrant colors comes not from deep blacks(which i personally consider ugly) or saturation, but from wise use of colors in general, making one of them outline others and also direct our sight. So his simple "i can boost the saturation on that video, look how more VIBRANT it looks" is nothing short of pure ignorance of the color theory. Actually his edited variant looks even uglier than the original in terms of colors.
