I've not played the original, but do you, or will you, have to reach your vantage point? Or do you just start there each mission?

It varies, but you have to sneak through a town, or other area, with the vantage area often being recommended, but not strictly necessary. (It might be required for one or two missions, IIRC)
Oh yeah, and you have to get out afterwards.
