Tl;dw CDProjekt Red is actually shit
Why does he read the entire fucking release from CDPR? Jesus christ. Edit: Oh my god then he reads an entire review, talk about padding your video for time does this guy know anything about brevity? Just summarize that shit and link the full text.
Overworking is an epidemic in the game industry, CDPR isn't the only one doing it. It's basically a necessity to pump out AAA games now.
Man that sucks, but it sounds like your typical studio growing pains. Good leadership is very hard to come by in this industry - especially in a country like Poland that doesn't have many other competing studios to headhunt from. It's not easy to double your studio's size in a couple years without major bumps in the road.
It's basically a necessity to pump out AAA games now.
Now is a bit misleading, if anything this used to be a lot worse (90's or so), as working in the games industry was considered a perk in and of itself, so studios underpaid and overworked people. Nowadays with startups and lifestyle focused tech companies, game companies can afford to get away with a lot less, or they're stuck with shitty/new developers who haven't burnt out yet which produces bad games. While crunching certainly hasn't gone anywhere it is nowhere near as bad as it used to be, and wages have risen substantially in games to stay in line with other development jobs. That being said there are still companies who try to get away with shit, which appears to be the case with CDPR, at least to some extent. Source: I'm a disgruntled, overworked professional game dev :hairpull:
did anyone watch the entire video? his reasoning is actually informed and hes talking about, mostly, work practices and how we can separate between loving a company and the ethics behind their practices to achieve their goals. Hes not saying CDProjekt Red is shit by any means, he addressed their statement in a critical form and shows how they did avoid certain topics about the real problem. Hes using a source too, and explains the evidence to why hes believing in it. You can get behind that thought or dismiss it too. I have worked on big happy image companies that are shit inside, with awful people and practices that abuse your patience. I dont really see why these guys could be far from that, after all we are all humans and make mistakes and dont function perfectly in all situations. All im saying, is that if these claims are true, and people are having a shit time working on there, i wouldnt discard the possibility of it being true just because the games are good and i like the company. The issue and the love can coexists and both require attention. Good on Yong for not avoiding hard topics even if it, as i see, gets tons of shit for it.
