U.S. to push ahead on climate pact before Trump takes over: Kerry
46 replies, posted
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Sunday the Obama administration would do everything it could to implement a global agreement to combat climate change before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
Kerry made the comments during a visit to New Zealand just before setting off to Marrakesh, Morocco to take part in climate talks between 200 nations.
Donald Trump, who calls global warming a hoax and has promised to quit the Paris Agreement, was considering ways to bypass a theoretical four-year procedure for leaving the accord, according to a source on Trump's transition team.
Please let this happen.
Please, God: if there is even one thing that Trump comes around on, let it be the threat posed by climate change. We simply can't afford four years of his denialism. This is the greatest threat facing the human race, and not only does he plan to do nothing to help fight against it, he wants to actively deregulate the standards already in place.

no didn't you hear, china and isis are the greatest threats facing our country right now, we gotta do that instead of deal with hoaxes like climate change, which we the US have spent enormous resources to prove without question.

I mean, once he becomes President, he sort of can't deny it can he? I mean... He's going to be informed on a lot of shit and given tons of information on the matter, including Presidential information we more than likely aren't privy to in regards to just how fucked we really are.
Right now he's just some rich schmuck with an less than scientific opinion, but once he becomes President he's gotta face reality.

Honestly I can see the 2 being hand in hand. Cut China out of the equation you cut emissions but a fuck ton.

I take it you weren't around during george w bush's administration? denying objective facts is the GOP's specialty

I was, and from what i remember the Bush administration did actually implement several initiatives, more to save a small amount of face that anything else in regards to "reducing" the intensity of greenhouse gasses, I say reducing, they basically only slowed it's production, instead of pushing for any attempt to actually lessen or reduce the impact.

you say that, but he's putting a climate change denier as head of energy.
"Ebell is an outspoken, longtime skeptic of the scientific consensus that human activity is dramatically changing the climate. He often refers to warnings about global warming as climate “alarmism” and is a vocal critic of President Obama’s climate change regulations.
Ebell has argued that the Clean Power Plan is illegal and that the Paris climate change agreement is unconstitutional."

Considering his appointed head of energy; no

Shit, I totally forgot about that.
Yeah, fuck.

I don't know, perhaps i just had this hope that he'd look at the clear and concise evidence and not ignore it in favor of his own opinions and agenda and yes, I know he's Trump, sort of asking for a lot, but that basically crushes any hope I had.

No no, the whole system is corrupt. He's got people you have never even heard of, because that's how good they are. They're going to to it bigly.

The more I read this the more it sounds like you're implying we should destroy China :v:
[sp]obviously not, tis a joke[/sp]
I think this is really important. It's clear to me he cares little (if at all) for the environment.
I would like to see more about Trump's "protect our own clean air and water" environment plans, and why it doesn't include CO2 emissions.
Question. Do you think Russia and maybe Trump are purposely trying to make the arctic melt?
It's quite possible that Putin is for it of course due to the increased military mobilization in the arctic, but I've been trying to think of possible reasons as to why Putin would like Trump and I highly doubt it's because he thinks Trump is stupid. If you have two nation that are actively trying to melt the arctic for its resources rather than one then it will speed up the process quite significantly and with Russia already having a foot in the door it would greatly improve their position to take most of it for themselves. Of course I only have those two thoughts and also Obama's administration willpower to reduce arctic resource mining/drilling to back this up unless I'm missing something I don't know.
Only reason I would think this because strategically it is not possible to be against climate change due to arctic changes. It exists and to ignore it or don't think it exists gives Russia the first move completely on controlling arctic trade and resources (which I think they already have). Maybe it is because Trump is stupid because of his belief against climate change that Putin wants to take advantage, I do not completely know, but I feel like there's going to be a large amount of politics involved with the arctic soon due to the exponential melting and the vast amount of open waters and resources available in the area.
Thoughts?

seems unlikely considering if the arctic melts, america's #1 GDP city and the financial capital of the world goes completely underwater

I don't think significant loss of arctic sea ice would raise sea levels given that displacement is already accounted for with sea ice. It's like ice cubes in a glass of water. You can lose a lot more extent and open lucrative shipping routes and resources without raising the seas. It's the ice shelves and glaciers (Greenland and Antarctica) that cause significant rise in sea levels.
Of course it's moot, since it's a positive feedback loop, and loss in sea ice will lead to warming via a loss in solar albedo, leading to loss of shelf ice, and thus rising seas. But if your interested in short term profits, then the melting Arctic ice is probably acceptable if you make your money from arctic exploration.
Not to mention this whole "lack of an o-zone layer means we all get fried by cosmic radiation and suffocate to death" business. I mean, if anybody here knows how to turn a profit from that, let me know, might as well make some money while the world literally burns to death.
That's if there's anybody left to spend it on by then, of course, given that the climate changes have been resulting in some pretty fucking catastrophic weather effects to bombard many coastal cities. (otherwise known as "most cities in the world".)
Unless, of course, Trump is actually an intergalactic supervillian who wants to get earth out of the way so he can build a trans-dimensional superhighway through its orbital path. I wouldn't put it past him, at this point.
I really hope trump is just ill-informed and not delusional.
I really hope trump is just ill-informed and not delusional.
how can you be ill informed on this level lol
I really hope trump is just ill-informed and not delusional.
I think with people like Trump, it comes down to different things. He's ill-informed of the facts and his ego doesn't allow him to consider alternatives to what he's made himself believe over the years. Because to him, he's Trump, he knows what he's doing, he knows what's best, he's always right, because he's Trump. And Trump doesn't think climate change is real because Trump can't feel it getting hotter and doesn't understand the science.
how can you be ill informed on this level lol
It's hard to hear anything when you have a wild ferret living on your head.
how can you be ill informed on this level lol
It's not difficult for people who don't understand the science to convince themselves that they're right.

It won't be too bad if Trump is pro nuclear.

most deniers refuse all evidence to the point of paying scientists to refute it
most deniers refuse all evidence to the point of paying scientists to refute it
People who pay off scientists for that aren't in denial, they're just worried about their business.

Well exactly that reason. For short-term profit. Of course they'll believe it's long term. Plus there's such a large amount of opportunities for a country to expand its power with minimal consequence. I mean we're talking resources, military, economic control. The arctic melting opens a whole new era of political conversations between political leaders.
cant wait for 4 years of clean coal
