Russian man faces 5 years in prison for playing Pokémon Go in a church
Ruslan Sokovsky, a Russian blogger from Yekaterinburg, was arrested on September 3, by a local court. The reason: in August, Sokolovsky posted a video on his YouTube channel showing him playing Pokémon Go—and catching actual pokémons—in the Temple on Blood, a local Orthodox church built to commemorate the murder of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. The police considers this to be a violation of the Russian law against mockery of religious beliefs.
Don't even joke about religion, my son. You'll get raided by Spetsnaz in a minute.
Fucking ridiculous.

Oh fuck off. How is filming yourself doing something in a church mocking fucking religious beliefs.
Murder of a tsar commederate somehow got connected with mockery of religious beliefs..
I see what you did there
Russia has been doing some loopy stuff lately, not so much dangerous but just plain fuckin weird.
this is why the separation of church and state is important everywhere
Russia is my favorite third world country
It's funny and sad how Russia has never had freedom of religion (except for maybe 1917 and the early 1990's) and only the two extremes - pro and anti religious.
Russia went from Amazing Atheist to High Sparrow right quick over this past decade.
Got what he deserves

Please be joking.
this is why the separation of church and state is important everywhere
And this is exactly what is stated in our Constitution.
And this is exactly what is stated in our Constitution.
It doesn't mean anything if the government violates it at every turn with no reprucussion.
And this is exactly what is stated in our Constitution.
doesn't seem to help

That's because the way religion is mentioned in our constitution is a joke.
If you have freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the press, can you tell me what adding "freedom of religion adds"? Seriously, imagine you have all the others but not specifically "freedom of religion." What exactly do you lose? All it adds is cases like Kim Davis or the "I want to wear a hijab at Abercrombie" cases. You know, the people who use the phrase as an excuse to circumvent civil law.
to be fair it is pretty disrespectful, but why didnt they just kick him out instead of arresting him

Given that he posted it to youtube after the fact, they probably didn't catch him in the act.
Unfortunate that he literally posted evidence against himself online like that.

What?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
It's really clear. It's probably one of the most clealr statements in the constitution. The government can't pass a law that in any way establishes an official religion. There can be no law mandating Sunday mast or religious charity or giving special benefits to churches over synagogues or whatever.
They also can't make a law that in any way prohibits it (unless it violates US law like what happened in Church of the Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah where killing an animal without the purpose of eating it after was forbidden, and then in the Jose Merced v. City of Euless which established the city can't outright ban the slaughtering of animals.)
Are you seriously going to say it has no use? Maybe it's not always enforced as it should be, but so much shit in this country is only as it is because of the 1st amendment.

So if I want to grab my captive prisoner and pull his heart out through his stomach, it's perfectly legal because the government can't stop me.

Given that Unidentified's flag says he's Russian, I'm presuming he's talking about the Constitution of Russia, not the Constitution of the United States. So I believe this entire conversation is moot in terms of Russian law.

No because if you paid attention to what I just said that'd be blocked by other laws, just like in Lukumi Babalu Aye v. City of Hialeah. You're allowed to excersize a religion up to the point where it infringes on a law, as long as that law does not discriminate against religious practice. You can't do that because it's illegal to murder, just like you can't sacrifice an animal without intent to eat it because it's illegal to kill animals with no cause.
Did you just read the first amendment and make a bunch of scenarios in your head instead of researching it at all? Your particular grievance is the subject of one of the most well known supreme court cases in this country.

Okay... I was replying to King Tiger though?
Okay... I was replying to King Tiger though?
My point is that Unidentified was speaking about the Constitution of Russia in a thread about Russia, but somehow that turned into discussing the United States Constitution in a thread about Russia.
I mean, whatever floats your boat, but it kinda seems like everyone careened into a discussion about an entirely different document and its implications due to a simple misunderstanding.
russia is a weird place
Important to note that this guy is seriously pro-atheistic and is active critic of religion in itself.
As he put "Why the hell religion is taught in schools but there are no evolution studies in churches?"
This is a perfect example of all that is wrong right now: murderers and thieves walk free but a guy defending his beliefs faces 5 to 10 years in prison.

seriously fucking weird how there is a country not even 100km from me that is like the polar opposite of the one i live in right now when it comes to human rights

Ironically enough the joke became a reality. A country where people get raided by OMON for nazi repost in vkontakte, while kids of billioners get escorted when charged for reckless driving and putting everyone in danger.
Russia is a big joke as a nation. Not only because of absurd regime and government, but the way people react to stuff like that can be summed up as 'It's russia, chill out'. I've seen lots of people victim blaming the guy and 'got what he deserved'. Whatever your views on religion and guy's attitude you should note the guy was arrested for 2 months simply for playing a game in church.
The interesting thing is, russian synagogues are absolutely ok with people playing pokemon go there. More to that, some guy received a bottle of kosher vine as a gift from the administration for catching a rare pokemon there. Just says a lot about Orthodox church.
Russian Church is not a religion. It's a fucking shady business empire, without taxes, but with limitless power.

Because we live in a VERY sensitive and easily offended society now, in this day and age :v:
