As if Kurzgesagt isn't existential dread inducing enough for most people, after clicking through the description to pull up part 2 of this video I also noticed CGP Grey is live right now: 👀
too might as well post it here
Nothing like a little existential dread in the morning.
how about i just die now
I really don't want to be too old when we end aging.
Being old and sick scares me more than the actual death.
Realistically, I'd be completely fine with gene therapy reaching the point where when I grow old I don't become more decrepit than say, a contemporary 50-60 year old before dying. I'd be content with that.

Quality of life declines so much in just that last 20-30 year stretch that if you even could be middle aged until death at like 110 or so it'd be a massive improvement. The only reason we accept death is because living long makes you fall apart. Imagine reaching 110 and knowing you could die at any moment because internally your body isn't quite there, but cosmetically you're 1:1 with any 20 year old. You'd never want to die.

I am not scared of dying as such but man I will be PISSED if the cure for aging comes out and I am too old.
Personally I could see myself being okay with living til I'm 80 or 90 but that's probably the reaper whispering in my ear or just narrowmindedness. The secondary questions lie in society and the lives around us. The world population is stabilizing and based upon this trend one could argue that if aging is delayed if not outright stopped then population would further taper off. Most societies in general are based around the idea of finite and predictable things especially in capitalism. If our societies continue this stance and aging is stopped/delayed then what dictates companies to hire on new inexperienced labor instead of keeping the decades or centuries of experience that senior employees (who don't biologically have any reason to retire now) have? Its the same singularity-esque argument that automation has against capitalist societies have. Of course there'll be some nuances, but its almost inevitable that anti-aging and/or commercialized automation will happen, ironically, within our lifetimes. Kurzgesagt posed an important question of if we live to be older will we care more about our planet and our descendants? As optimistic as this is, I can't help but feel that it won't completely happen. Human nature (like legislation) doesn't improve at the same pace as technology. We may still have just-wanna-watch-the-world-burn people who then don't see the ramifications (or don't care) about automation/anti-aging and will continue the status quo. TL;DR I'm all for researching this and automation but I feel that society and human nature still have some catching up to do.
Just stick my brain in a robot and then focus on keeping the brain healthy.
Does free healthcare or insurance cover this because I really don't wanna pay millions for every month prescriptions and having an addiction to immortality.
I want a "San Junipero" solution tbh. Living longer in the real world sounds a bit shit.

I love Kurtzgesagt but I really hate it when they make a video that just throws questions into the air without attempting to present possible answers. I know it's to invite discussion without steering the debate towards anything specific but serving up its usual existential dread without any payoff almost feels clickbait-y. CGP did it correctly; "IMHO fuck death, here's why".
I am not scared of dying as such but man I will be PISSED if the cure for aging comes out and I am too old.
it's not going to happen for a long, long time
it's not going to happen for a long, long time
How do you figure? How many thousands of years passed before humans figured out how to fly, then in the span of well under 100 years we went from baby's first flight to flying off to the Moon and widespread commercial flights. The internet and computing was even faster; in the span of some people's lives, we've gone from nothing to having computers powerful enough to support AI that are beating humans in specific domains, and everyone walks around with a powerful computer in the palm of their hand, while the internet connects the vast majority of the world with near instant communication. Science has been advancing in leaps and bounds; what now might seem like science fiction could easily become mundane in 100 years.
how about i just die now
can i have your remaining lifespan if you're not using it?
If by my 30's they can halt aging, I'll take it up in a heartbeat, I feel anything past 50 and your well fucked. Nobody wants to look saggy forever. Idk how I'd feel about being "immortal" either. I believe that, if I retained the looks of the 30's and was like 400 or so years old, there might be and should be a point where I am just so fucking bored of living that death looks suitable. Plus, all your friends die unless they take this immortal drug and yadda yadda Also, Governments would install LONGER sentences if dying was prevented, If I commit a crime i don't wanna sit in a cell for 250 fucking years
What if we stop aging and become immortal, only to find out that the consciousness irreversably degrades over time so we end up with lots of people who are just not right? Imagine if they're world leaders or other influental people? That's what scares me

Might as well stick around at 50 for a bit until you can be reverse aged back to 20.

Aging is complicated as fuck and caused by a myriad of factors and I doubt the limits of said medication were it to exist would be unknown. There's very rarely a good reason to ever actually lock someone up for more than 10-20 years.
I personally find the thought of accepting your own death very eerie, yet doing so is what can relieve you from dread. I can imagine myself clinging on to life at 100+ years in tears, ruminating on the missed opportunities in life.

I disagree with this video. It starts with the presumption that death is misery. Maybe for the ones left behind, but I'm pretty sure the person who dies doesn't feel bad after they die. Or anything, for that matter.
