It used to be popular in India and Brazil, but it's no longer used by many people. "Ten years ago, Orkut was Google's first foray into social networking. Built as a '20 percent' project, Orkut communities started conversations, and forged connections, that had never existed before. Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut's growth, we've decided to bid Orkut farewell," informs Orkut's blog.

This Google Trends chart illustrates the rise and fall of Orkut:
Gee, almost forgot about this. Also, was there anything particularly special about it?
Heh. "Orkut" in finnish is slang for "orgasms". Perhaps that's why the social network failed to compete.
Never even heard of this.
Never even heard of this.
Neither have I but should I be surprised? it's fate says, probably not. Facebook is absolutely massive after all http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=%2Fm%2F0290kv%2C%20%2Fm%2F02y1vz&cmpt=q you don't even have to look at numbers to think "God damn, you can't even compare the two"
The first and last time i'll ever hear of it i suppose
Heh. "Orkut" in finnish is slang for "orgasms". Perhaps that's why the social network failed to compete.
and kut means cunt in dutch
howz wez goin ta tell boyz 'bout da WAAAAAGH now?
Maybe Google+ will follow suit as well. You know, while we're shutting things that failed down and all that.
Never heard of it. But with a name like that i'm not surprised. "Hey do you have an orkut?"
Gee, almost forgot about this. Also, was there anything particularly special about it?
It seemed to attract Brazilians, LOTS OF THEM.
Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off
Have I been missing something with Google+? I thought it was just something that Google has been trying to get to jump start but just can't do it.
Have I been missing something with Google+? I thought it was just something that Google has been trying to get to jump start but just can't do it.
I heard it's very popular in foreign countries but I haven't seen any of my friends from Sweden or Canada post on it since it was invite only. I guess it's just a South America and Africa thing
Have I been missing something with Google+? I thought it was just something that Google has been trying to get to jump start but just can't do it.
It's not really failed, it just hasn't reached the level of popularity that facebook has. It is full of pretty good ideas, but between the idea that they were too late to the party, not being a *significantly* better product than whats already available, and that tinfoil hats think google is just trying to document every portion of their life to feed the venusians, theres really no momentum for it to overtake facebook as the primary social network of choice.
It seemed to attract Brazilians, LOTS OF THEM.
brazillions of them
Maybe Google+ will follow suit as well. You know, while we're shutting things that failed down and all that.
Google+ has failed to compete with Facebook, but it hasn't failed. Google+ is used way more in the professional world than Facebook is.
G+ is also not as awful or ugly :v:
Never even heard of this.
It got really big in Brazil and India for some weird reason. People here only moved to Facebook in like, 2010-11 Which basically means all of my embarassing photos and statuses are on this website so thanks, Google!
G+ is also not as awful or ugly :v:
My biggest problem with Google+ was that i was forced to use it with YouTube. It could have probably succeeded if they just left it on its own.
I may not post on Google+ regularly, but I use Hangouts all the time. Hangouts is also really easy for other applications to use, so it's got that over Facebook.
This would have been one of the biggest reason i would have moved over to Google+ if it wasn't forced on me.

Yes, it asks you to use your real name. You can say no if you don't want to. Having a Google+ account attached to your YouTube account doesn't really ruin your YouTube experience, does it?

Now i'm stuck with an extra account tied to my email that does nothing.
It was a completely unnecessary change. There was really no point to it.
Now your YouTube name doesn't have to be your username? You can create additional YouTube channels under one YouTube account? It fits with the improved commenting system?

What if I don't want a message box to pop up all the time asking me if I want it? At least they did stop asking (apparently) but god, took them way longer than it should have
google+ is taking off
Only because you force feed it to people
Google+ has failed to compete with Facebook, but it hasn't failed. Google+ is used way more in the professional world than Facebook is.
Where it fails to linkedIN so you can't really say it succeeded there either :P
Where it fails to linkedIN so you can't really say it succeeded there either :P
They're for different purposes, though. Google+ is like the Facebook profile that you want the public to see.
They're for different purposes, though. Google+ is like the Facebook profile that you want the public to see.
No, that's pretty much LinkedIn or Facebook. I don't get what you mean, Facebook is for private use or something?
